INP completes 2022 NDNP Grant

The Illinois Newspaper Project is happy to announce the completion of our 2022 National Digital Newspaper Program grant (which took place between March 2023 and August 2025). We have officially digitized and provided access to the nine nominations selected by our advisory board for this grant cycle: 

  • Canton Weekly Register (Canton, Ill.) 1852-1914, nominated by Western Illinois University Archives & Special Collections 
  • The Citizen / Irish News and Chicago Citizen / The Chicago Citizen (Chicago, Ill.), 1882-1928, nominated by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library on behalf of an individual 
  • The Du Quoin Tribune (Du Quoin, Ill.), 1867-1871, nominated by Du Quoin Public Library 
  • East St. Louis Daily Journal (East St. Louis, Ill.), 1910-1926, nominated (twice!) by the St. Clair County Historical Society and the St. Clair County Genealogical Society 
  • Fulton Journal (Fulton, Ill.), 1877-1879, nominated by Schmaling Memorial Public Library District  
  • Genius of Liberty (Lowell, Ill.), 1840-1842, nominated by Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library on behalf of an individual 
  • Genius of Universal Emancipation (Hennepin, Ill.), 1838-1839, nominated by Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library on behalf of an individual 
  • The Grayville Herald / The Grayville Weekly Herald (Grayville, Ill.), 1855-1858, nominated by Groff Memorial Public Library & Museum 
  • The Greenville Advocate (Greenville, Ill.), 1858-1864, nominated by Bond County Historical Society 

For this grant, we added 19 unique LCCNs (Library of Congress Calls Numbers, assigned when a newspaper title changes, noting preceding/succeeding titles of related newspapers), 10,879 issues, and 100,848 pages of historical newspapers available for research in both Chronicling America, the national digital newspaper collection hosted by the Library of Congress, and the Illinois Digital Newspaper Collections, our own homegrown digital newspaper repository here at Illinois!
