Open Access Publishing Agreement with Wiley for 2026 and 2027

The University of Illinois, through its participation in the BTAA consortium, has secured an open access publishing agreement with Wiley for calendar years 2026 and 2027.

Through December 31, 2027, under this new contract, Illinois and its students, faculty, and staff will enjoy:

  • Unlimited open access publishing for articles accepted in 2026 and 2027 in Wiley Hybrid OA journals at no cost to authors (faculty, students, and staff)
  • No caps or limits on the number of eligible articles in these hybrid journals
  • Full read access to the Wiley journal portfolio through your institution
  • Perpetual access rights to subscribed content

Important Changes to the Publishing Experience

The agreement maintains the BTAA’s “no fees, no caps, no limits” approach for Wiley hybrid OA journal articles accepted in 2026 and 2027, meaning there is no institutional cap on the number of eligible open access articles.

The notable change for authors is that the new contract will limit free APC publishing in Wiley gold OA journals. Articles submitted to gold OA journals by August 31, 2026, are guaranteed to be covered under the central BTAA contract. Articles submitted and accepted for gold journals between September 1, 2026, and December 31, 2027, will require funding from sources outside the University Library.
