The Illinois Informatics Institute (I ³ ) will host an open house on Thursday, October 1, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in its new location, Room 306 Main Library.

The event will provide opportunities for faculty members to network, discuss collaborative projects, and learn more about resources available to support research. It will feature poster sessions highlighting I ³ -sponsored projects as well as presentations by members of I ³ , I-CHASS (Institute for Computing in Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences) and CII (Community Informatics Initiative) , a joint endeavor between I ³ and the Graduate School of Library and Information Science . Faculty members with existing I ³ projects will be available to discuss their research and ideas for collaboration on future grants.

The new location is adjacent to the University Library’s Scholarly Commons, which will offer a variety of services related to e-learning, scholarly communications, data curation, and digital content creation.  It provides a central, accessible, and convenient location for faculty members engaged in informatics-related teaching and research.

Chartered in 2007, I ³ continues to serve the campus by:

•    fostering multidisciplinary collaboration;
•    offering informatics courses and academic programs;
•    sponsoring research and technology development;
•    providing support for informatics-related speakers and events;
•    facilitating collaboration, internships, recruiting, and other activities involving corporate partners.

The University Library is a founding partner in the Illinois Informatics Institute.

Janice Pilch, associate professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library, has been appointed Visiting Program Officer (VPO) on International Copyright by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL).  She will work with ARL’s Public Policies Strategic Direction and be responsible for research and policy formulation on international copyright issues relating to libraries.

Pilch has researched and published on international copyright issues at Illinois since 2001.  She is currently the Germanic Languages and Literatures Librarian within the University’s Modern Languages and Linguistics Library .

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library has acquired its 11-millionth volume, Benjamin Franklin’s edition of M. T. Cicero’s Cato Major, or his Discourse of Old-Age—the first English translation of Classical literature printed in the new world.

Cicero’s essay on aging was printed and sold by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia in 1744.  Many consider Franklin’s edition the finest example of American Colonial printing.  The volume is also known as the first large-print book printed in America and believed to be Franklin’s personal favorite among the books he printed.  It now resides in The Rare Book & Manuscript Library at the University of Illinois.

The University Library will celebrate this milestone during Illinois Homecoming 2009 .  On October 9, Illinois alumni, Robert and Emily Watts of Champaign, Illinois, whose gift made the acquisition of this volume possible, and Paula T. Kaufman, Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson Dean of Libraries and University Librarian, will take part in the Homecoming Parade at Illinois.  After the parade, U of I Chancellor Richard Herman will make remarks and recognize the 11-millionth volume and the Wattses at the Pep Rally.

“The 11-millionth volume exemplifies not only the quality of our collection, but its depth and breadth,” said Paula Kaufman.  “We’re thrilled we could fulfill Bob and Emily’s long-standing wish to provide our Library with a milestone volume and we thank them for generously funding this special addition to our collection.”

Also on October 9, The Rare Book & Manuscript Library will host The Classics in America: A Symposium in Celebration of the Acquisition of the 11-millionth Book in the Collections of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign .  Distinguished lecturers will speak on topics ranging from Colonial curricula in schools to the new Classical Educational Movement.

The University Library has celebrated all of its millionth volumes—the first being Sir Walter Raleigh’s The History of the World, printed in 1614.  Every millionth volume will be on display in The Rare Book & Manuscript Library in a special exhibit, One in a Million: An Exhibition of Eleven Landmark Acquisitions at the University of Illinois , beginning September 28 and running through December 18. Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Coordinator for Information Literacy Services and Associate Professor of Library Administration at the University Library, is the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Member of the Week.  She is the 2009-2010 ACRL vice-president/president-elect and has been an ACRL member since 1994. The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections have moved to a new location on the third floor of the Main Library (320 Library).

The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections phone number, (217) 333-1777, remains unchanged.  The Web site address is www.library.illinois.edu/ihx .

The collections contain approximately 25,000 volumes, 2,000 cubic feet of manuscripts, and a large number of maps, broadsides, prints and photographs, artifacts, and ephemera.  The new location gives users direct access to these materials.

Sue Searing, Library and Information Sciences Librarian since 1999, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Library School Alumni Association (LSAA) at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  The annual award recognizes friends of GSLIS (including faculty, staff, alumni, and non-alumni) who have served LSAA or GSLIS in an exceptional way.  Searing was one of three University of Illinois LIS librarians honored.  According to LSAA, award recipients ensure the quality of the LIS Library’s collection.  They developed strategies to serve remote users, implemented e-mail reference, piloted electronic reserves, enhanced the Web site, increased instructional offerings, and launched a new service model for the LIS Library.

Awards were given on July 12, 2009, at at reception held at the annual meeting of the American Library Association (ALA).

Over the next six months, the Library will be shifting large numbers of books and journals in the Main Stacks and other locations as part of long-term collection management and building projects. Library users may find more items in the online catalog with a status of “in process” during this period, and may also find that materials maintain this status for longer than usual.

Library users are encouraged to check I-Share, the statewide catalog, to see if a copy is available from another library in the I-Share consortium.   For instructions on requesting books online via I-Share, see www.library.illinois.edu/ugl/howdoi/checkout.html or call the Library Phone Center at (217) 333-8400.

Books not owned by an I-Share library, may be available through the Library’s Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Office .  Library users can also seek assistance from subject specialists listed at www.library.illinois.edu/administration/collections/subjectdirectory.html .
