The University Library knows there is no “typical” library users, and we try to provide study spaces that reflect that variety of needs. Family study rooms encourage students to bring their little Illini to the Library with them. Learn more about our full offering of Parent and Family Services.
Main Library
The Family Study Room (Room 13) is located on the first floor of the Main Library in the Orange Room. This space includes adult and child-sized furniture, a play kitchen, and children’s books. You can also use your iCard to check out a Family Kit with coloring books, games, toys, and puzzles. Amazon Fire Tablets and a Pack-n-Play are also available to check out at the circulation desk in the Orange Room, as are headphones and sensory tools/fidget devices.
Grainger Engineering Library and Information Center
We also offer a Family Study Room in Grainger Engineering Library Information Center. This room includes adult and child-sized furniture, and STEM-themed Activity Kits that can be checked out at the circulation desk on the first floor.
Additionally, there is a Lactation Space in Room 442 of Grainger, offering a private, comfortable space for parents to breast/chestfeed while on the job or in their studies.
Funk ACES Library
The Funk ACES Library has Activity Kits for Children available for check-out from the Circulation Desk on the second floor. Activity Kits are organized by Funk-related theme (such as food and agriculture, animals, and city planning) and target age group. A typical Activity Kit will contain two books, a single-player activity, a whiteboard, and dry erase markers.
Additionally, Funk has three different Resource Trunks for Educators, which are provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Each Resource Trunk contains books, samples, and activities to support teaching and learning about Illinois natural resources. Anyone may borrow a trunk, and the standard loan period is 2 weeks.
