Portions of the Geology Library Stacks and the entire Geology Map Room located in the Natural History Building (1301 West Green Street, Urbana) are closed until further notice. Upon discovering structural deficiencies in the elevated concrete floors, Campus Facilities and Services (F&S) had the building’s 1908 addition vacated and closed off. The problem is not due to deferred maintenance issues or building degradation, but has existed since the addition’s construction. The University Library is working with F&S to address safety concerns, collection access, and environmental controls.
The Geology Library circulation desk and staff areas are currently open; however, much of the Geology Library Reading Room is being used to process materials for transfer to other Library units and is unavailable to the public at this time. Some print material may need to be borrowed from other libraries for the near future, and patrons should allow extra time in such cases. Information on borrowing materials from other libraries is located on the Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Web site.
The east entrance to the Natural History Building from Mathews Avenue is the only entrance open at this time due to the addition closure and the repair project. Please refer to the building entrance map . Also, until elevator service is restored, there is no wheelchair access to the building.
Please visit the Geology Library Web site for 24/7 access to digital resources, including e-books and electronic journals (also available through the Online Research Resources (ORR) ). Additional resources may also be available through the Grainger Engineering Library and the Map and Geography Library . If you need any assistance locating Geology materials, please contact Lura Joseph (Head, Geology Library). If you have other questions regarding the University Library, please contact Scott Walter (Associate University Librarian for Services and Associate Dean of Libraries).
