Disbinding & Rebinding

Procedure:

Procedure:

Disbinding & Rebinding

Photo of Old, Ragged Pamphlets

#1: Pamphlets which were bound many decades earlier present multiple problems in a rebinding procedure.

#2: The older, acidic binders have become quite brittle and no longer serve to protect their contents.

Photo of Un-Flysheeted Pamphlet

#3: Many older pamphlets were placed in binders without protective fly sheets. The binder tapes were glued directly to the covers. These covers are often torn in the process of disbinding and rebinding.

#4: Sometimes the binder tapes have dried out and no longer adhere to the paper of the pamphlet. Such tapes can sometimes be easily lifted or peeled off without damaging the paper.

#5: The staples on these older pamphlets are often rusted and must be cut loose with wire cutters and pulled away with pliers. We try to cut most of the metal away so that it is not dragged through the old paper.

#6: Once the pamphlet is removed from the old binding, we repair the torn covers and inside pages, as needed, and then rebind it with a method appropriate to its condition.
