National Bibliography of Hungary

Page decoration

Hungary has a rich history of bibliography in general. A national repository was established in Hungary in 1802 with the founding of the National Széchényi Library. From that point on, there was a move to obtain a copy of every work published in Hungarian for the library. Initially, the collection was based on the private library of Count Ferenc Széchényi, donated to the nation in 1802. The generous donation of the library’s namesake inspired many in Hungary to donate materials to the library, continuing the development of the collection. In 1808, the Hungarian National Assembly established the Hungarian National Museum with the mission of collecting historical and archaeological materials to be added to the collection. The goal of a comprehensive collection of Hungarian materials was supported by the passage of a mandatory deposit law, first passed in 1840 requiring one copy of each publication to be added to the library’s collection. The purpose of the library was clearly defined from its inception and has changed little. Its mission as stated on the library’s webpage (http://www.oszk.hu) is to collect:

  • All works published within the borders of Hungary at a given time, in whatever language they may be written. (By the expression ‘the borders of Hungary at a given time’ we mean the territory of Hungary and Transylvania up to 1918 (with the exclusion of Croatia and Slavonia), including the counties of Pozsega, Verőce and Szerém up to 1868, and including Fiume between 1779 and 1918; the newly formed territory of Hungary after 1919, considering the temporary change of borders that took place in 1938 and 1941, respectively.)
  • All works published in Hungarian.
  • All works written by Hungarian authors, or with the collaboration of Hungarians, in other languages and published outside of Hungary.
  • All works published abroad in foreign languages with a Hungarian aspect.

The Austrian-Hungarian Compromise in 1867 was a decisive moment for the evolution of the National Széchényi Library. Having entered under the jurisdiction of the Hungarian Ministry of Religion and Public Education, the foundations of its further development were laid down by the provisions of the new minister, József Eötvös. His decree issued on December 18, 1868 ordained the reorganization of the library based on the classification system of the royal library in Munich as well as the cataloging of heretofore unprocessed documents that included periodicals and newspapers. It was only in the aftermath of the reorganization that national bibliographies, including the indices for periodicals and newspapers, could be published systematically in the columns of Magyar könyvszemle, the official bibliographical journal (issues accessible online for 1876-2013), and later in edited volumes entitled Magyar Könyvészet and Magyar Nemzeti Bibliográfia. A number of bibliographers have worked in the National Library but perhaps none so renowned as Géza Petrik who compiled the most extensive retrospective national bibliography of Hungarian titles spanning works published from 1712 to 1920. Hungary has continued its tradition of rich and varied bibliographic sources taking full advantage of the electronic options available today. As will be clear from the list below, they have the largest number and most advanced resources, freely available for national bibliography.

Note: This page is structured in a slightly different way from others in this guide. As it is customary, this page provides a guide to the retrospective and current national bibliographies as well as to the Hungarian Bibliography of Bibliographies as it traces their historical development. Yet, since so many of the Hungarian national bibliographic sources exist in electronic form, the description of online accessibility, when applicable, will be included after the general description of the printed resources. Resources for periodicals and newspapers are mentioned here only in passing and are treated more extensively in an individual section entitled ‘Hungarian Periodical Resources.’

Retrospective Bibliography

As in so many of the East European countries, the publication of the national bibliography has been inconsistent during certain periods. The Hungarians began compilation and publication of their national bibliographic sources early on. However, until the 1940s there was no one title which consistently listed all the publications of Hungary. Instead, the bibliography appeared in different publications during different periods. The Magyar Nemzeti Bibliográfia or, under its English title, the National Bibliography of Hungary has been published by the Széchényi Library since 1946. In the past six decades the range of publication types included has been expanded and its form of publication has been changed: a publication in electronic format has gradually replaced the previously printed publication.

Specimen Hungariae Literatae title page

The Specimen literatae reflects an attempt to summarize the works of writers in the Hungarian Kingdom and it contains 269 alphabetically ordered short biographies. It is also supplemented by a Bibliotheca, a systematically ordered list of works on Hungary which counts as the oldest Hungarian bibliography.

Magyar könyvesház avagy a magyar könyveknek kinyomtatásuk szerint való rövid említésük.

Sándor, IstvánGyőr, 1803. 285 pp.

Available online: http://mek.oszk.hu/12700/12744/#

The Magyar Könyvesház is the first published bibliography. It offers a chronological display of data on 3,632 Hungarian-language books published between 1533 and 1800. For the background research, Sándor relied on his own library, conducted research at the Royal Library in Vienna and at libraries in the Hungarian towns of Debrecen and Eger. He also benefited from the assistance of several colleagues who were sending him titles. Sándor used nearly all important works of 18th century Hungarian literary history, including booksellers’ catalogues (published in an increasing number from the end of the century). For a detailed analytical description of this work in Hungarian, please consult György Pogány, „Sándor István és a Magyar Könyvesház” Könyvtári Figyelő (Library Review) New Series 13. (Vol. 49.) Reig magyar konyvtar title page

Published in several volumes over the course of two decades, Szabó’s Régi Magyar Könyvtár served as the actual basis for a national bibliography. It chronologically lists books published in Hungarian and about Hungary during the years 1473 to 1711. Volume one lists nearly 1800 titles published in Hungarian from 1531 to 1711. The second volume compiles nearly 2500 titles published between 1473-1711 in Hungary, in languages other than Hungarian. The two parts of volume three list over 4800 titles by Hungarian authors, published abroad in 1480-1670 and 1671-1711, respectively.
Corrections and supplements appeared in the immediate aftermath of the publication, among which one should mention Lajos Dézsi’s 48 entries in “Additamenta ad bibliographiam typis hungaricis impressorum,” Magyar Könyvszemle (1906), 131-153 and Sztripszky Hiador’s Adalékok Szabó Károly Régi magyar könyvtár c. munkájának I-II. kötetéhez. Pótlások és igazítások, 1472-1711. Budapest, 1912 [Reprint Budapest, 1967]. 621 pp. The latter contains 732 additional type-written entries  (451 in Hungarian, 281 in foreign languages) with literary and bibliographical documentation and also includes the 89 unpublished supplements prepared previously by Lajos Dézsi. The Régi Magyar Könyvtár is a truly remarkable source which tracks the early history of book publishing in Hungary.

Online Access

As with the other resources available at the website of the National Bibliography, Szabó’s bibliography and Sztripszky’s supplements are fully searchable. The abbreviated forms for the individual volumes are RMK I, RMK II, RMK III, RMK III, 1 and RMK III, 2. The online tool has expanded its accessibility, with its high quality images of the sources described in the bibliography. The search interface is in Hungarian and requires the use of the appropriate diacritics.

Supplements to Petrik’s Magyarország bibliographiája appeared in four additional volumes.

Magyarország bibliographiája, 1712-1860. vol. V. Pótlások Petrik Géza Magyarország bibliographiája 1712-1860. c. művének 1-4. kötetéhez.

Komjáthy, Miklósné. Budapest, 1971. 561 p.
This source supplements Petrik’s original 4-volume listing and it differs from Petrik’s original work in that the upper time limit is changed to 1800 instead of 1860, because currently by „early printed book” Hungarian bibliographers mean an edition published no later than 1800. The geographical area is also restricted. Supplements lists documents published within the borders of Hungary at that time, including Transylvania and Fiume. However, this volume does not include documents published in Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia because of legal reasons. Books constitute the core of the volume. However, it includes a selection of ephemera which are important for the study of the history of printing, especially the history of printing in Hungary as well as other miscellaneous titles that could be important for scholars of different disciplines. It does not include newspapers or periodicals, engravings without printed texts on them, insignificant single-sheet ephemera such as advertisements or posters. It also excludes forms used in public administration in the 1790s.

Magyarország bibliographiája, 1712-1860. Vol. VI. Nyomda- és kiadástörténeti mutató az 1-5. kötethez.

Markos, Béla. Budapest, 1972. 567 p.
This volume contains the typographical index and publication history to the previously published volumes.

Magyarország bibliographiája, 1712-1860. Vol.VII. Pótlások Petrik Géza Magyarország bibliographiája 1712-1860. c. művének 1-4. kötetéhez.

Pavercsik, Ilona. Budapest, 1989-1991.
The publication of previous supplements to Petrik’s work was the starting point for more comprehensive, larger-scale research of 18th-century printed matter. With the assistance of different libraries in Hungary in gathering data countrywide, the National Széchényi Library began work soon after the two volumes were published. This comprehensive collection of information served a double purpose: on the one hand, it was to record, in a central register, documents printed up to 1800 housed in different public collections (state and church libraries, museums and archives,) around the country. On the other hand, it was to collect descriptions of unknown documents and to include them in a fresh volume. Volume VII of Petrik’s bibliography also comprises editions printed between 1701 and 1711 which are not included in either Károly Szabó’s bibliography or in Supplements compiled by Szripszky. Adaptation to international standards which categorized works according to centuries was the reason behind this change.

Magyarország bibliographiája, 1712-1860. Vol. VIII. Függelék.

Ecsedy, Judit V. Budapest, 1991.
This work is a continuation and supplement of Volume VII Supplements of Géza Petrik’s bibliography, published in 1989. Appendix lists ephemera that do not appear in Volume VII of Petrik’s bibliography, by reason of their sizes and their special character (theatre posters, obituaries and pictures of saints bearing printed texts).

Online Access

With the exception of volume six, Petrik’s four volumes and the subsequently published supplements are accessible at the website of the National Bibliography. The abbreviated forms for the individual volumes are Petrik 1712-1860/I-IV, Petrik 1712-1860/V, Petrik 1712-1860/VII and Petrik 1712-1860/VIII.

Magyar irok elete es munkai cover

A product of three decades’ worth of industry, this is a biobibliographical source covering some 30,000 Hungarian authors and their works in Hungarian. Entries are arranged alphabetically. The bibliographies are as thorough as was possible for the compiler and include references to newspaper and periodical articles as well as books. The first section of the articles contain biographical data on authors until the 1900s followed by the chronological list of their respective works. After the publication information of the specific articles and studies, Szinnyei presents the most significant works about each author as well as the location of their portraits. He interprets the notion of ‘writer’ broadly, including in this category everyone who published or left manuscripts behind in Hungarian or a foreign language.

A continuation of this work was begun by Pál Gulyás who prepared six volumes in 1939-1944 covering entries under the letter A through D. It was János Viczián who resumed the effort redacting entries between the letters E-Ö published in thirteen additional volumes (Pál Gulyás and János Viczián, Magyar írók élete és munkái. Vols 1-19. Budapest, 1990-2002). Because of the constant need for this resource, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has recently digitized the entries under the letters P through ZY. This resource is readily searchable based on the alphabetical list of entries displayed in the left side of the web page.

Much of this work was compiled by Géza Petrik, one of Hungary’s most important bibliographers. Petrik assembled the materials for this bibliography alone, making the work all that more impressive. These difficult circumstances also explain some of the errors and omissions of the original publication. Recognizing that some titles were omitted from the original publication, librarians at the National Library have set out to prepare volumes that include those titles.
While the title of this compilation varies over time (the series was published under the title Magyarország bibliographiája from 1712-1860), all volumes are primarily an alphabetical list of the books in Hungarian, published within the borders of Hungary and deposited in the Hungarian National Library. The contributors and the publication dates have also changed but the bibliographies published under Magyar könyvészet and the previously mentioned title are chronologically complete for the years between 1712-1923For the years, 1712-1860, 1860-1875 and 1901-1910, periodical titles with their contents are listed. The focus is on Hungarian language publications and only the volumes for the early years, 1712-1860 include foreign language publications and Hungarica. Subject indices were only published for the period between 1860-1900.

Entries for works published in 1712-1941 included in this catalog have also been made freely available online at the homepage of the National Bibliography but they do not include the disparate publications from 1921-1941 prepared by Blanka Pikler, Pál Gulyás, Ella Szollás et al. Fortunately, one can access the most recent bibliography for 1921-1944 which was completed by Katalin Komjáthy et al. in 2005 and which is also listed below. The catalogs mentioned here are fully searchable. There are simple and advanced search interfaces all requiring a knowledge of the Hungarian language. There is no English language interface in this database. The search interface also requires the use of diacritics. The results do duplicate the records in the published volumes. The format in which they are presented is somewhat different. The linked materials demonstrate the differences in the catalogs.

Description of Separate Issues

Petrik, Géza. Magyar Könyvészet, 1860-1875. Budapest, 1885.

This bibliographical work contributed in many ways to the perfection in use of the bibliographical series in the field of scientific research work. The bibliography, arranged in alphabetical system, disclosed in 438 pages the titles of the monographic works in Hungarian language, published in Hungary, the analytical description of studies and articles of the most important periodicals. The publications in foreign language published in Hungary and the documents of Hungarian concern published abroad were not included in the volume.

Kiszlingstein, Sándor. Magyar Könyvészet, 1876-1885. Budapest, 1890.

Kiszlingstein’s work is the organic continuation of Petrik’s bibliographical cycle of 16 years (1860-1875). The deficiencies in the Petrik bibliography discovered in the meantime were made up by the inclusion of the results of the latest bibliographical researches and of the entries omitted from the 1860-1875 cycle. Kiszlingstein also published the titles of the Hungarian periodicals, newspapers issued in the period of 1876-1885, taking as a starting point the works of the excellent Hungarian bibliographers József Szinnyei and Antal Szalády. He also included the index of these periodicals compiled according to the place of publication.

Petrik, Géza. Magyar Könyvészet, 1886-1900. vol.1-2. Budapest, 1908, 1913.

Commissioned again to compile the cumulative bibliography for the period 1885-1900, Géza Petrik published another two volumes. The first volume contained in alphabetical order the entries of Hungarian books, maps and books of maps published in the period of 1886-1900, on 985 pages. It does not include the foreign language material published in Hungary and the documents in Hungarian language or of Hungarian concern (so called Hungarica material) published abroad. The second volume has an index based on the modern, serviceable and useful subject-word system which substituted previously used alphabetical indexes based on subject groups.

Petrik, Géza and Imre Barcza. Magyar Könyvészet, 1901-1910. vol.1-2. Budapest, 1917, 1928.

The last number of Géza Petrik’s monumental life-work is the 1901-1910 cycle of Magyar Könyvészetcomprising the bibliographical data of the Hungarian books, periodicals, newspapers, atlases and maps published during the aforesaid period. Out of the two bulky volumes of 757 and 928 pages, respectively, the second was co-edited with Imre Barcza as a result of Petrik’s death in 1925. The first volume (letters A-K) of this last and partly posthumous work of Géza Petrik’s appeared in 1917, and the second (letters L-Z) in 1928, altogether on 1691 leaves, comprising approx. of more than 76.000 entries.

Kozocsa, Sándor. Magyar Könyvészet, 1911-1920. vol.1-2. Budapest, 1939, 1942.

Compiled by Imre Barcza, the last numbers of the previous Petrik cycle formed the basis for the national bibliography covering the years 1911-1920. The two volumes of 1096 pages prepared by Kozocsa left the press in 1939 (letters A-K) and in 1942 (letters L-Z) and included the alphabetical list of books, reprints, musical compositions and maps published in the period of 1911-1920. More importantly, as the editor’s preface explained the important novelty of this part of the cycle was that the bibliography registered not only the publications in Hungarian language, but also those published in Hungary in foreign languages. Although the compiler adhered to Petrik’s system, these volumes opened a new phase in the history of the national bibliography in an additional sense. As a result of a special decree from the Ministry of Religion and Education, the compilation and edition of the Hungarian national bibliography passed namely to the sphere of competency of the national library.

The bibliographical work for the period 1911-1920 was finished by the end of 1937 and included plans for a third volume, i.e. a bibliography of the periodicals and newspapers, as well as an index of the first two alphabetical volumes. Unfortunately, the outbreak of World War II prevented the compilation and publication of these supplements.

Pikler, Blanka. Magyar Könyvészet, 1921-1923.vol 1-6. Budapest, 1924-1926.

Published in six issues, this compilation contains the alphabetical list of authors, the anonymous titles and subject-headings. It did not appear in 1924-1929.

Gulyás, Pál and Blanka Pikler. Magyar Könyvészet, 1930. Budapest, 1932.

As the previous one, this compilation contains the alphabetical list of authors, the anonymous titles and subject-headings. It was not published in 1931-1935.

Szollás, Ella et al. Magyar Könyvészet, 1936-1940. Vols. 1-6. Budapest, 1939-1942.

Compiled by Júlia Mokcsay, Olga Droszt and Ella Szollás, these volumes were bibliographies published annually and included, besides the alphabetical list of writers and subject-headings, an index of authors.

Komjáthy, Katalin, Gyula Kertész and Ferenc Kégli. Magyar Könyvészet, 1921-1944. vol. I-VIII. Budapest, 1980-2005.

Since the national bibliographic record had been collected and published in disparate issues and covered the period 1923-1944 unevenly, the National Library has compiled this retrospective bibliography. The alphabetical index contains the names of authors, co-authors and contributors, the title of the work as well as the personal, corporate and geographical-administrative names which occur in the documents as their subjects. Each of the printed volumes covered fields of scholarship as follows:

  • General Works. Philosophy. Religion.
  • Social Sciences 1. Society. Politics. Economics.
  • Social sciences 2. Law. Public Administration. Public Welfare. Pedagogy. Ethnography.
  • Natural Sciences. Medicine. Technology. Agriculture.
  • Arts. Sports. Geography. Biography. History.
  • Linguistics. Literature.
  • Hungarian Literature
  • Supplements and Corrections to Vols. I-VII.

Online Access: Additional Information

The digitized version of printed volumes I-VII is available on the homepage of the National Bibliography of Hungary. It lists, regardless of content, descriptions of books, annals (with the exception of school reports), directories, calendars, almanacs, publications of corporate bodies, congress proceedings as well as descriptions of textbooks used in higher education, all published within the borders of Hungary at the given time. Analytical entries have been made of collective publications and anthologies of fiction. The alphabetical index of the bibliography is searchable. Clicking on a reference to an entry in the index will load an image of the appropriate page of the scanned volume. In the case of a supplement, the numbered entry will appear.

Sebestyén, Géza. Magyar könyvészet, 1945-1960. Vols. I-V. Suppl. 1-2. Budapest, 1964-1969.

Established in 1952, the Bibliographical Section of the National Library compiled these volumes after its initial assignment to prepare a bibliography for 1921-1944 was revoked. The initial temporal limit of the collection expanded from 1954 to 1958, 1959 and subsequently to 1960. Given that the chief editor and assistant director of the National Library insisted on the completeness of the subject-matter based on politically unassailable examples from the USSR and the GDR, the bibliography also contained archbishop Mindszenthy’s speeches as well as Géza Losonczy’s and Imre Nagy’s works and lectures. Additional volumes were published after 1960. Yet since they rely on the entries in the Magyar Nemzeti Bibliográfia, the primary national bibliography from 1961, they will not be described here.
The volumes that appeared in 1964-1968 contained an alphabetical index, the registry of published works as well as supplements. Two additional volumes listed maps and musical pieces published in Hungary. Each of the printed volumes covered fields of scholarship as follows:

  • General Works. Philosophy. Theology. Sociology. Linguistics.
  • Natural Sciences. Medicine. Agronomy.
  • Technology.
  • Arts. Literature. Geography. History.
  • Alphabetical index for vols. I-IV.

Current Bibliography

Hungarian Bibliography of Bibliographies.

Magyar Bibliográfiák Bibliográfiája, 1956/57-1974/76. Budapest: OSZK, 1960-1979.
U of I Library Call Number: Oak Street Facility 016.01 M277 (U of I holds 1956-1976).

Appearing in 1960, the first volume of this bibliography registered the independent and hidden indices published in 1956-1957.This carefully edited collection was prepared for the next twenty years and its separate volumes were usually issued every 2-3 years. Although hidden indices do not meet the basic criteria of bibliographies, yet may be valuable sources, the authors included ones listing over 50 titles as a result of which a significant section of this work contained these types of indices. One should add that a supplement to the work included bibliographical information on 260 periodicals. While this allowed the patron to have an easy overview of periodicals issued by important institutions, the supplement could not function as a “reference on reference.”

Although it was believed to be an invaluable part of the Hungarian national bibliographical system, work on this secondary bibliography was suspended and then discontinued in the 1980s as a result of a shortage of resources and qualified labor. The National Library has not considered the preparation of a bibliography of bibliographies a necessary element of its work ever since.

Magyar Nemzeti Bibliográfia.

Budapest: Országos Széchényi Könyvtár, 1946- .
U of I Library Call Number: Main Stacks 015.4391 M278 (U of I holds 1951-1977:15).
The Magyar Nemzeti Bibliográfia or, under its English title, the National Bibliography of Hungary has been published by the Széchényi Library since 1946 and constitutes one of the most important services of the National Széchényi Library. In the past 60 years the range of publication types included has been widened and its form of publication has been altered: a publication in electronic format has gradually replaced the previously printed publication.

The beginnings of the current national bibliography go back to the early 1940s. In order to provide frequent bibliographical indices for recent publications, the Hungarian Sociographic Institute in Pécs published the Magyar Nemzeti Bibliográfia edited by Sándor Krisztics monthly between January 1941 and March 1944. The national bibliography is still issued under this general title today.

Magyar Nemzeti Bibliográfia.

Budapest: OSZK, 1946-1977.

A sample entry from Magyar Nemzeti BibliografiaThis early series includes all monographic publications issued in Hungary as well as maps, records and music publications.  It does not contain special issues, unless they are part of a series, small printed material or high-school publications. The bibliography is arranged by UDC (Universal Decimal Classification) making it subject accessible for those familiar with the Dewey subject arrangement. The series was issued monthly until 1960 and semi-monthly from 1961 onward. Every issue has an index. Author indices and index of series are included. An index of periodicals is issued separately under the title Magyar folyóiratok repertóriuma.
As can be seen from the example on the left, the entries provide extensive descriptions. Collections include lists of the contents of the volumes. An annual compilation under the title Magyar Könyvészetalso offers this information, but lacks the detailed subject information included in this bibliography.
This part of the national bibliography is not available online. While many of the records contained in its pages can be found in the union catalog at the National Library website, the older records do not include the detail that is available in the national bibliography.

Supplementary Issues

A Magyar folyóiratok repertóriuma.

Budapest, 1946-1977.
The repertoire of periodicals contains an index of essays published in Hungarian scientific and general journals. Contributions in literary journals and book reviews are not listed.

Magyar zeneművek bibliográfiája.

However, it has separate issues for books, periodicals, maps and musical pieces. The paper bibliography for books entitled Magyar Nemzeti Bibliográfia. Könyvek Bibliográfiája is issued semimonthly and is arranged alphabetically by subject in correspondence with Hungarian and international guidelines. The collection excludes schoolbooks for primary and secondary education, special issues (unless they are part of a series), factory publications, catalogues and regulations (unless they are already part of a collection), patent documents, propaganda and miscellaneous materials.
The series for periodicals entitled Magyar Nemzeti Bibliográfia. Új Periódikumok is issued quarterly and contains the bibliographical headings of periodicals which have either changed names or have recently been established.
