Information for Rhetoric Instructors

The Teaching, Learning, and Academic Support Unit provides a variety of instruction sessions to help Rhetoric students learn important research skills which will prepare and support them for any research assignment. Instruction options are grouped based on the amount of class time (50 minutes or 75 minutes) and include a short description. Additionally, instructors of 50 minute classes can pick to have their students attend one or two library sessions.

Please keep these tips in mind as you explore the different options:

  1. Library instruction will be the most helpful for your students when they have an assignment that requires them to do research.
  2. Students will learn better if the library instruction session is scheduled for when students are just starting to work on their research assignment.

After reviewing the instruction options below, please complete the Library Instruction Request Form.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact Alex Deeke, Undergraduate Teaching & Learning Librarian, at deeke3@illinois.edu or by phone at (217) 265-4230.

Options for 50 Minute Classes

Early Bird

Two sessions, one scheduled early in the semester and a follow up later in the semester, designed to build up students’ research skills. The first session introduces strategies for beginning the undergraduate research process and the second reinforces those skills by engaging student’s critical thinking while searching library databases.

Double

Two sessions, one week apart, that explore using library databases, digging deeper into subject specialized databases, and evaluating sources. Students will experience the full research process with hands-on practice time with the librarian.

50 Minute Orange

A single session that demonstrates how to find and evaluate sources using a library database. Students will know where to find academic sources and how to tell if those sources are appropriate for an undergraduate level research assignment.

50 Minute Blue

A single session that explores multiple library databases. Students will understand the basics of using generalized databases and when to dig deeper to find sources in a subject specialized database.

Options for 75 Minute Classes

75 Minute Orange

A single, 75-minute session that demonstrates how to find and evaluate sources using a library database. Students will know where to find academic sources and how to tell if those sources are appropriate for an undergraduate level research assignment. Session includes search time with the librarian to help students reinforce those skills.

75 Minute Blue

A single, 75-minute session that explores multiple library databases. Students will understand the basics of using generalized databases and when to dig deeper for sources into a subject specialized database. Session includes search time with the librarian to help students reinforce those skills.

75 Minute Orange & Blue Combo

A single, 75-minute session designed to familiarize students with strategies for performing undergraduate level research. Students will understand how to evaluate the appropriateness of a source for academic research. Students will also explore library databases and understand when to use a generalized database and when to dig deeper into a subject specialized database. Session includes search time with the librarian to help students reinforce those skills.
