Digital Imaging Best Practices

In order to create the best-quality digital surrogates for library materials, we use the following practices when photographing objects and processing images.

Technical Metadata

Text-only Items - Theses, Dissertations, General Stacks

  • 400 DPI
  • 3000 pixels on long edge
  • sRGB
  • 8 bit
  • Exclude target item level target (beginning/end of volume)
  • Crop just inside page edge
  • Create Optimized Character Recognition (OCR) PDF after Quality Control

Preservation Files

  • 600 DPI
  • Fixed pixel array
  • Adobe RGB
  • 16 bit
  • Include target item level target (beginning/end of volume)
  • Crop just inside page edge
Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Archival Items
