Sustainability in a Global Context

Welcome to the University Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign!

The University Library is the largest publicly supported academic library in the United States.  We have over 13 million volumes of books, numerous online resources, and people throughout the Library to help you find your way around.  We have listed a few helpful links below to support your teams while you are working on your projects for the Global Studies Summer Workshop on Sustainable Futures.  Wi-fi is available throughout the Library, in addition to library computers, to make your work here easier.  You will need to be authenticated through our system to get to the resources marked with but other resources and websites are freely available to you while you are here and when you go home.

CIA World Factbook – From the U.S. government this resource provides current information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 267 world entities.

Europa World Plus – This resource expands upon the factual information available from the CIA World Factbook and includes a breakdown of government offices, publishers, broadcast and print media, and other details in addition to statistics on the economy.

World Bank – Environmental Indicators – Look up the terms for which the World Bank collects data by clicking on the “More Environmental Indicators” button, or go directly to the “Databank” button and select your topic from the drop-down list provided.

Popular Databases for Policy and the Environment

CAB Abstracts and Global Health – The majority of the citations are scholarly in nature, but it is possible to access annual reports of various organizations that will include useful information and statistics.

FEDSYS – Links to U.S. Government Information provided by the Government Printing Office and includes reports, legislation, hearing transcripts and more.

PAIS (Public Affairs International Service) – Access to popular and scholarly writing about a large number of policy issues.
