7:00 International Film Week: Watoto Wa Mitaani
Main Library, Room 66.
Documentarian and UIUC alum, Michael Stewart seeks to discover the personalities of 5 street children while at the same time understanding the large scale circumstances that confront them on a daily basis. Issues such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, sexual violence, and a lack of shelter interplay on the streets. In this setting the boys' talents, warm personalities and general happiness provide a stark contrast, as well as a glimpse into Tanzania's and Africa's strength. Guest Speaker: Michael Stewart.

This multi-award winning film highlights the lives of three friends living in a Czech housing project who find that happiness comes from the place where you least expect it in this quirky and heartfelt drama. As the shadow of the country’s largest chemical factory looms over their bleak suburb, they hold out hope for a brighter future in another place.

7:00 International Film Week: Gie
Based on a true story, Soe Hok Gie was a Chinese-Indonesian student activist in the sixties. Set in one of the darkest eras of modern Indonesian history, the film Gie is an interpretation of actual events as narrated in the late activist’s journal. His life is a clash between the high drama of political events, and the small world of friendship and love. Guest Speaker: Tinuk Yampolsky
