Mortenson Center Advisory Committee Charge and Membership

Charge
The Advisory Committee advises the Director on center policy and procedures.

Composition
The Committee of nine Faculty members, at least half of whom are drawn from the Library faculty, are appointed to the Mortenson Advisory Committee by the University Librarian, in consultation with the Executive Committee, and on the recommendation of the Director of the Mortenson Center. The appointed members serve two-year staggered terms and may be reappointed to successive terms, not to exceed four years.

Meeting began at 11:03am.

    1. Attended by: Clara M. Chu, Katie Ebeling, Ana Rodriguez, Bob Geraci, Dara Goldman, Emily Knox, Ken Salo, Mara Thacker and Yali Feng
    2. Not in Attendance: Lisa Hinchliffe and Courtney Becks

    1. 30th Anniversary Celebration: Nov. 8, 2021: Forum and 31st Annual Mortenson Distinguished Lecture; other activities; Associates maps – “Engineering Change” workshops, Feb. 1 & 15, 2022
      • Mara Thacker asked why chat was disabled during a majority of the 31st Annual Distinguished Lecture with Dr. Agnes Kaposi; Clara explained that it was to prevent Zoom bombings.

      • Panelist at 2021 American Library Association Virtual Conference on Celebrating Welcoming Week: A Guide for Libraries (2020).
      • Ken Salo brought up discussion regarding collaboration opportunities with the New American Welcome Center/University YMCA (NAWC). Ken stated he is interested in cultural politics and how we are all centered within institutions. Ken explained how, going forward, he is interested in discussing how we all respond to Calls to Action and ways to create dialogue with the Welcoming Center.
      • Clara provided insight in how the Mortenson Center has collaborated with the NAWC since 2020 surrounding Welcoming Week.

      • Yali Feng openly brought up the subject of peace and healing and how it might align with another project with EJP library https://educationjustice.net/program/community-library/. Yali explained how EJP is a prison library that the U of I involves, and stated that the EJP library is on the different dimension of peace and healing theme that Mortenson has been working on.
      • Clara asked Yali to follow up with her via email to further discuss this topic.

    3. Information Action Briefs – new publication
      • Clara explained that the UN SDG IAB’s will be published soon through IDEALS. The first four to be released are #16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, #13: Climate Action, #12: Responsible Production & Consumption as well as #17: Partnerships for the Goals.
    4.   1. Ken Salo:
    1. Announced that he would love to partner with someone going forward regarding future collaborations surrounding institutional cultural politics.
  2. Dara Goldman:
    1. Announced that she enjoys learning about the Mortenson Center’s events and plans and loves that we share the challenges we face in addition to our successes, and how we always move forward despite the challenges we face.
    2. Dara explained how in her department of The Program in Jewish Culture & Society is creating a new archive focused specifically on archiving Jewish related materials from localized Jewish communities, attempting to capture the community history and materials before they are lost or destroyed. She informed us that she has been focusing a lot on communities located Danville, Illinois of late.
    3. The goal is to make this a developing model that she can use to share strategies and best practices from going forward.

  3. Emily Knox:
    1. Announced that her department has been reviewing joint degrees that have a strong international focus such as a joint degree with a Masters in Social Work as well as a joint degree with the Law school. She is open to ideas which support fellows or international/global communities.
    2. Dara Goldman suggested Emily connect with the Spanish department; Emily said she will follow up.
  4. Clara Chu:
    1. Announced that the 2022 (32nd) Annual Distinguished Lecturer has been decided upon, and it will be Mike Thomson (BBC World Affairs Correspondent, Presenter and Author)
  5. Yali Feng:
    1. Yali followed up stating that she will reach out to Clara Chu regarding EJP, discussed earlier.
