Scope of Service
The Born Digital Content Preservation service leads library efforts in the management and curation of born digital collections. The service includes consultative services for born digital special collections, expert consultation related to digital preservation issues, and recovery of collections materials from obsolete physical digital media. Recovery work is accomplished in-house or in collaboration with trusted vendors. All services are provided on behalf of content curators who are responsible for oversight on questions of rights, storage, and access to the materials in question.
All policy decisions related to the digital reformatting of library holdings for preservation purposes will be made in consideration of the Association of Research Libraries’ Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries ( PDF ). The guidelines hold that Libraries have the right to make digital copies of items in risk of deterioration or inaccessibility due to format obsolescence. However, these guidelines only protect preservation copying – they do not cover access such as online distribution.
