Graduate Hourly – Evening and Weekend – Social Sciences, Health, and Education Library (SSHEL) - General Information

Graduate Hourly positions are open to University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Graduate Students only.

Number of Openings: 3
Hours per week anticipated: 5-10
Hourly Rate: $22.00
Anticipated Start Date: August 16, 2026
Schedule: This position is for evening (9pm-midnight) and weekend hours. Each individual will work 1-2 evening shifts per week and rotate weekend shifts throughout the semester. Employees will not be expected to work during fall, winter, or spring break.
Academic Term(s) of Employment anticipated: 2026-2027 Academic Year

Summary
SSHEL is hiring three graduate hourly employees to work at the Information Services Desk during evening and weekend hours for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Serve as the lead staff in SSHEL, including supervision of undergraduate student employees.
  • Answer patron questions in online and in-person formats, including staffing the Library’s online Ask a Librarian chat service.
  • Open or close the SSHEL library space
  • Provide support for SSHEL operations through project work (examples include searching potential new titles in the library catalog and reviewing SSHEL web content).
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Enrolled as Graduate Student in the School of Information Sciences Master’s program for Library and Information Sciences (MSLIS) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for the 2026-2027 Academic Year
  • Able to regularly work evening (up to midnight) hours on a weekly basis and weekend hours on a rotating basis throughout the semester.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate consistently with SSHEL staff, librarians, and graduate employees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in public, academic, or school libraries or archives.
  • Experience with public services or customer services work
  • Leadership or supervisory experience

* Graduate students with existing Library positions are welcome to apply, but please note that graduate students should not work more than 26.8 hours/per week across all positions during fall and spring semesters. This total includes both graduate hourly and pre-professional graduate assistant positions.
