3D Digitization

What is 3D Digitization

3D Digitization is the process of capturing and recreating a real-world object into a 3D representation. Our resources focus on digitizing with photogrammetry and 3D scanning technology, specifically structured light 3D scanning and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR).

  • Photogrammetry stitches together photographs of an object or a scene taken at different angles into a 3 dimensional digital representation. Photogrammetry tools apply software algorithms to identify key characteristics to reconstruct the shape of an object.
  • Structured Light 3D scanning projects a known pattern of light or a set of parallel lines onto a surface or object, and uses a computer to interpret the distortions of that pattern when recorded by a sensor.
  • LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) uses lasers to bounce light off of an object to generate a point cloud, much like radar bounces radio waves off an object to calculate its position in space.

Get started with 3D Digitization

You can self-start these projects and find resources at the library, such as access to camera and lighting loanable technology at the Media Commons in the Main Library and advanced 3D scanning support and equipment for faculty and staff research at the IDEA Lab. If you have questions or request for support services, complete the 3D Digitization Request Form or contact the IDEA Lab at idealab@illinois.library.edu. Once you have submitted a request, a staff member will contact you within 3 business days to discuss the next steps. Learn more about this technology and our resources in the Digitizing in 3 Dimensions library guide (libguide).

Self-starting projects

DSLR cameras and smartphone cameras both have a place in photogrammetry. DSLRs excel in producing high-quality images with more control and detail, while smartphones offer convenience, portability, and ease of use. The choice ultimately depends on your specific needs, budget, and how complex your project is. There are 3 main photogrammetry tool that you have access to as a student or staff: Meshroom, Polycam, and RealityCapture. The computers in the IDEA Lab’s 3D Design Lab have RealityCapture and reservations are open to anyone with an active iCard during operational hours or by appointment.

IDEA Lab services

The IDEA Lab provides advanced 3D digitization consultations. Complete the 3D Digitization Consultation Request Form to schedule a one-on-one with our staff. Once you have submitted a request, a staff member will contact you within 3 business days to discuss the next steps. Please be advised that it is the researcher’s responsibility to adhere to best practices concerning copyright, HIPAA compliance, and other regulations subject to their research.
