Undergraduate Hourly – Digitization Student Assistant – Rare Book & Manuscript Library - General Information

Undergraduate Hourly positions are open to enrolled University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Undergraduate Students only.

Hourly Rate:  $15.00

Schedule:  Monday-Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Summary
The digitization student assistant works under the supervision of the RBML’s Digitization Coordinator. These 10 hours involve performing duties related to the digitization of rare books and archival collections. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9am and 5pm.

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Digitization of selected rare books and archival collections to fulfill patron digitization requests and RBML projects.
  • Working with the Digitization Coordinator on in-house digitization activities using a Canon digital SLR camera.
  • Using a range of common productivity and specialized computer applications and databases (Adobe Photoshop, Box accounts, Aeon, Library catalog, etc).
  • Includes opportunities to be involved in RBML projects as assigned by the Digitization Coordinator, such as public outreach activities, exhibits, and public programming.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled as an Undergraduate Student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for the Academic Terms of Employment listed above.
  • Interest in working in and learning about RBML collections and subjects
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a multicultural environment
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills
  • Reliability
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office and Photoshop
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Student pursuing an undergraduate degree related to fine arts and/or photography
  • Experience with digital cameras and with Adobe Creative Suite products (particularly Photoshop)
  • Previous library or customer service experience
  • Experience handling rare and fragile materials
  • Familiarity with the Library’s catalog search, specifically the Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress classification systems
