Pre-Professional Graduate Assistantship – Acquisitions and Cataloging Services: Cataloging - General Information

Acquisitions and Cataloging Services (ACS) is looking for a graduate assistant for the 2026-2027 academic year.

  • Period of Work: 20 hours per week (50% FTE) August 16, 2026 – May 15, 2027

Major Duties and Responsibilities: The Graduate Assistant for Cataloging will catalog resources in various languages and formats, including rare books and special collections materials. The Graduate Assistant will learn practical aspects of cataloging, including integrated library systems, OCLC, and local cataloging policies that will be beneficial to understanding how cataloging functions in an academic library and how the work impacts user services. The Graduate Assistant will also assist with special projects related to cataloging and workflow management. This position will provide exposure to the working environment of one of the largest public academic libraries, as well as one of the most significant repositories for rare books and manuscripts in the United States.

Requirements and Qualifications

Required:

  • Enrolled (at the time of appointment) in the School of Information Sciences at Illinois (iSchool) graduate program.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of at least one language other than English.

Preferred:

  • Work or research experience in an academic library.
  • Coursework in bibliographic metadata.
  • Interest in library technical services.
  • Interest in learning new things.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
