Pre-Professional Graduate Assistantship – Teaching, Learning, and Academic Support (TLAS) - General Information

  • Job duration: August 16, 2026 – May 15, 2027 including academic semesters and breaks.
  • Hours: 14 hours a week (35% appointments)

Job Description

As members of our team, Teaching, Learning, and Academic Support (TLAS) GAs participate in the full scope of public service responsibilities in the Main Library, including teaching library instruction classes and workshops, providing research assistance, supervising study space, and working on other substantive pre-professional projects (see Additional Responsibilities section below for possibilities).

TLAS GAs are expected to teach 7-20 library instruction sessions or workshops per semester both independently and with other GAs or library staff. GAs will teach undergraduate-level and/or graduate-level library instruction, depending on the needs of the unit and the nature of requests from campus instructors and program leads.

TLAS strives to provide a well-rounded pre-professional experience in public services where GAs work with various librarians and other GAs to complete a range of projects during their appointments and build a portfolio of work that will enable them to be career-ready upon graduation, particularly in the areas of: effective research skills, information literacy and teaching skills, knowledge of information resources, appropriate customer service behaviors, and develop administrative skills through student supervision.

Demonstrating a solid work ethic, ability to work within and contribute to a large team, flexibility, and excellent communication skills are crucial to success in this position.

Main Responsibilities 

  • Teach library instruction sessions, in-person, online via Zoom, or asynchronously for:
    • Classes that fulfill the University’s Composition I requirement for domestic and international undergraduate students

AND/OR

    • Graduate academic and business writing classes for international students and workshops in the Library-wide workshop series.
  • Work regularly scheduled shifts with librarians and other GAs on the Main Library Information Desk, including evening and weekend shifts.
  • Provide one-on-one undergraduate research consultations.
  • Attend weekly meetings and other required library training sessions.

Additional Responsibilities (these will vary by GA and semester)

GAs will participate in projects that support emergent unit and library needs, primarily in, but not limited to, the areas listed below.

E-learning (video tutorials, Canvas modules, LibGuides, and workshop instruction); Government Information (collection management, outreach such as exhibits or voter literacy); Programming (programs to engage students such as paint and sip, button making, movie nights, or clothing exchanges); Student Success (assist with library services that contribute to holistic student success in personal, professional, and academic ways); and Undergraduate Research (help with undergrad research certificate program work and undergrad publishing efforts). May supervise undergraduate students in an undergraduate-focused study space.

Qualifications 

Required

  • Ability to interact and work with a diversity of people, and therefore possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Active commitment to maintaining a culture of inclusion and respect and dedication to the practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility;
  • Enrollment in the iSchool’s on-campus MS/LIS program; residency in the Champaign-Urbana area;
  • Ability or experience teaching or speaking in front of a group of 10 or more people.

Preferred

  • Previous customer service experience;
  • Previous library experience;
  • Previous teaching experience;
  • Interest or experience working with undergraduate students.
