For studio reservation please fill out the form located here.

Members of the UIUC Community are eligible to reserve the audio studio

  • We strive to respond within 2 business days of the form submission

  • When listing availability, please indicate as many dates as possible. The studio is often completely booked weeks in advance
  • The form must be submitted at least 4 business days prior to the first desired or requested date.

A member of the Media Commons staff will contact individuals to further discuss the project, equipment needs and dates. Once approved Media Commons staff will be present, at an initial training session, to assist with the setting up of equipment, and instruction on the basics of editing.

About the Audio Studio

The Media Commons Audio Booth is a two-room, sound-dampening recording booth located on the Lower Level of the Unergraduate Library. The two rooms are joined by a soundproof glass window. The 6ft by 6ft Control Room contains all of the recording equipment. The 12ft by 12ft Live Room is where you conduct the audio recording (note: a single person can operate the studio using monitor, keyboard and mouse in the Live Room).

Please bring removable media to transfer files after your session (or plan to upload to cloud storage).

  • Two (2) - Shure SM-7 Broadcast Microphones (mounted on Rode PSA1 swivel stands)
  • Apogee Quartet 4-channel Microphone Interface
  • Presonus Monitor Station
  • Three (3) - KRK KNS6400 Studio Headphones
  • Two (2) - Shure SM57 (upon request)

Methods of Recording in the Audio Booth

iMac in the Control Room

  • Equipped with Reaper software (Pro Tools 11 available upon request)
  • Best option with an additional person to coordinate the recordings

Monitor in the Live Room

  • Mirror of iMac in Control Room
  • USB hub to copy files located below monitor arm

Policies and Procedures

Responsibilities of Media Commons Staff.

  • The studio will be initially prepared in a clean and efficient manner for ease of use and instruction.
  • A staff member from the Media Commons will also instruct the patron on the basic usage of the audio studio, as well as the workflow for capturing audio. This will be based on the specific need of the patron.
  • The staff member will assist with moving the data captured from the audio production studio to a hard drive provided by the patron, if desired.
  • If asked, the staff member will instruct the patron on the basics of audio editing (or set up an appointment to do so).

Responsibilities of the Patron using the Video Production Studio

  • Patrons should bring a storage device (preferrably USB 3 or higher) to save the data once the audio recording is completed (or check out an external drive from the Loanable Technology desk).
  • Patrons should come prepared to record.
  • Patrons should follow instructions of the Staff member regarding care and treatment of the equipment.
  • Only individuals involved in recording audio are allowed in the studio.

Please note that the library is not responsible for any damage that may occur on equipment as a result of media borrowed from the library or used internally.
