Jean Cutler materials relating to Kenneth Gaburo and Harry Partch

Description

Four cartons of materials received on 22 November, 1996 dealing with donor’s theater productions on which he collaborated with former School of Music composers Kenneth Gaburo, Lejaren Hiller, and others. Gaburo items complement materials received previously from Gaburo’s estate. Donation received from Cutler consisted of approximately 1,000 items, including:

41 audio tapes
3 reels/hubs of motion picture film
838 slides, and 51sets of paper documents (scripts, rehearsal plans, photographs. Cutler’s notes and memos, etc.).

Six cartons of materials relating to Harry Partch were received on June 1, 1996, consisting of:

31 reels of video film documenting Partch’s activities in Los Angeles in the 1980s, along with soundtrack tapes
29 reels of audio tapes, largely interviews of Partch recorded in September, 1969, but also including lectures and rehearsal tapes; typescript essays, lecture texts, etc.
correspondence
photographs
documentation of 1962 University of Illinois production of “Revelation;”
other miscellaneous items.

Arrangement

Gaburo materials incorporated with items from Gaburo’s estate. Separate record groups have been established by University Archives personnel for materials not related to Kenneth Gaburo. Partch materials are incorporated into Harry Partch archive in the Music and Performing Arts Library arranged by type of material and/or donor.

Collections File (“Cutter, Jean [includes Gaburo, Hiller, & UIUC Theater items]”) has Cutler’s inventory of 9 July 1996*; William McClellan’s list of contents of cartons 1-4; and copies of correspondence between McClellan and Cutler.

*File folder is missing from Music Library as of January 2014, but most likely has been incorporated into the University or Sousa Archives control files.

See the Jean Cutler Theatrical Films, Audio Recordings and Papers, 1959-1995 at the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music which contains 5.2 cubic feet of Jean Cutler materials. It reads:

“These materials were part of a larger collection of Cutler’s personal papers that was donated to the University of Illinois Music Library in 1996 and transferred to the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music in 2010. Materials retained by the Sousa Archives relate exclusively to Cutler’s collaborations with Harry Partch and Kenneth Gaburo.”
