Geography Collection Description

The collection is maintained by the Map & Geography Library.

The Geography collection supports teaching and research of the Geography Department through, and beyond, the doctoral level. The Map & Geography Library also supports the University’s interests in basic travel literature and the history of discovery and exploration. Books concentrating on geography, discovery and exploration, and climate have been collected by the University Library since its inception but were not brought together until 1911 when the Natural History Library was formed. The geography collections were moved to the map library in 1956 to form the Map & Geography Library. The collection is composed of 189,000 volumes, of which 14,000 are located in the departmental library. The geography collection, including those in the Bookstacks and the Rare Book and Special Collections Library, is recognized as one of the finest in the nation.
