Classics Collection Description

The collection is maintained by the Classics Library.

The Classics Collection primarily supports the teaching and research of the Department of the Classics. However, since Classics, the study of the Greco-Roman world in all its manifestations, is an inter-disciplinary subject, the scope of the collection is wide. It includes materials which are of significant value not only to students and faculty of the Department of the Classics, but also to members of other departments, including the departments of Art, Comparative Literature, English, History, Philosophy, the Medieval Studies Program, and the Program for the Study of Religion.

Approximately 58,000 volumes are held in the Classics Library along with the most recent textual and bibliographic databases for classics. More than 17,000 additional volumes are in the Bookstacks, while the Rare Book and Special Collections Library holds several thousand other titles from the early days of printing in the fifteenth century into the nineteenth century. In addition to local use, scholars from North America and Europe use the collection through reference questions, interlibrary loan, and by personal visits.
