2.4       Report of the University Librarian

Background checks are expected to begin October 5. This is something that is happening at all of our peer institutions. Students hired by the Library will not get background checks. We will have more discussion as we go forward.

Budget – Given the current stalemate in Springfield, there was not much that could be said about the budget. Wilkin expressed gratitude for everyone’s participation in the Library update meeting that was held in room 106. Reminder, things are not as smooth sailing around campus as we are feeling. We still have a freeze on changes to salaries. We cannot make equity-based adjustments. We will be rolling out the FY17 budget process soon. Strategic Planning is aligning nicely with the Budget process. Preliminary draft from Strategic planning has gone forward.

Grants – We are working on the metadata for a grant coming to the State Library. We are also participating with GSLIS in a digital humanities grant being funded by the IMLS. Congratulations to Harriett Green for her work on this. There will be a press release soon for a $1M Mellon Grant awarded in collaboration with African American Studies, IPRH, GSLIS, and Scholarly Communications and Publishing.

UIUC College of Medicine – A joint UIC-UIUC task force will soon be appointed regarding support for the respective campus medical colleges.

2.5       Executive Committee Report and Discussion

Kirstin Dougan provided brief background on the Executive Committee (EC) and pointed out that all documents related to EC matters  are on their website which can be found via the Library’s website. The direct link is: http://www.library.illinois.edu/export/committee/exec/charge.html

3.         Discussion Topics

3.1       Federal funding agencies’ new policies on public access to articles and data see PowerPoint at http://www.library.illinois.edu/committee/faculty_meeting/.

Heidi Imker and Dan Tracy provided an overview of the purpose of the Office of Science Technology and Policy (OSTP) 2013 memo which provides much of the direction of efforts related to research data management.  Directed to federal agencies with over $100M in annual funding, the memo’s purpose is to maximize impact and accountability of federal research investment.

The directive requires deposit either the final manuscript submitted by the author or the pdf from the journal. All generally have a 12 month embargo from date of publication. Be careful of what you sign in your publisher agreements. Check out the website: DMPTool.org

Questions and discussion focused on issues regarding obtaining compliance of  researchers to deposit their data.
