Minutes

1. Welcome and Introduction

Lisa asked everyone to reintroduce themselves for Anna.

2. Agenda Review

The committee reviewed the agenda. No additions were made.

3. Acclamations and Accolades

Susan reported that the Undergraduate Library conducted 40 classes last week.

Harriet reported on a digital humanities workshop she led with a good discussion on pedagogy. She also shared that she has received a Laura Bush 21st century library grant, which will be used for a 3-year project to teach libraries and librarians to use the HathiTrust and its tools.

4. Library Gateway and WordPress

Chris Prom will be attending User Education meetings instead of Jemma.

Lisa provided an overview of the Gateway redevelopment project, which is receiving a reboot with the new User Experience librarian Suzanne Chapman.

There is a proposal to create a subcommittee between CAPT and the Content Group for the website.

Chris joined the meeting and discussed the upcoming launch of ILL pages in WordPress, which Suzanne Chapman has been working on. Chris reported that LibAnswers integrates well into WordPress, and there is a plan to evaluate user response after the first launch.

5. LEARN/UGL Webpages/LibGuides Content Review

Chris and Lisa discussed a proposed trial of LibGuidesCMS. LibGuidesCMS is a version of LibGuides that includes additional functionality including an API (application program interface)—a way for a developer to get data back from a system and evaluate it. If the trial is successful, Chris and Lisa will request a funding upgrade for the LibGuides subscription.

6. LibGuides 2.0 Implementation

Crystal reported on the progress of the A-Z database list. Users can view different databases by filtering subject, type or vendors. The next step in the implementation process is a call for feedback from subject experts to evaluate specific subject classifications and databases.

Sandy asked if SFX will look different. Lisa answered that the SFX online database will not be going away and it is separate, but there is encouragement to use the LibGuide links for ease of use. To access databases through SFX, users link from VuFind to SFX to the database. The LibGuides A-Z list takes a user straight to the database.

7. LibAnswers Implementation

The formal process will begin later this month or in early November. Through the website development process, there has been a trial with the ILL webpages. There will be a roll out to include more units, and the next major step is putting in the Rolodex content. When this happens, the Reference/User Education working group will need to develop policy and procedures.

8. Briefing for AUL for User Services

Lisa has her first meeting with JoAnn on Thursday and will invite her to come to a future User Education Committee meeting.

9. Open Discussion/Announcements

Crystal is working with Eric Kurt in the Undergraduate Library Media Commons on the Illinois Mediaspace—a YouTube-like service for the U of I campus. The Library can use it as media space for all units. Users access the space with their net ID. Crystal and Eric plan to have an open house to provide instruction on using Mediaspace.

Respectfully submitted,

Anna Lapp
