Minutes

  1. Approval of May 5 minutes (see g:/social sciences division/minutes/draft minutes).
    • Minutes were approved.
  1. Announcements and Discussion Items:
    • David Ward presented information about a Library Space Team, which is a three-year task force focused on studies of Library spaces. These studies will go beyond basic room counts and include surveys, focus groups, and qualitative assessments.  The intent is to gather information from Library and non-Library users.  The purpose is to understand differences in various locations and spaces with a goal to make the Library more welcoming.  This is likely to affect signage and accessibility.  Current members are David Ward, Jen-chien Yu, Tim Newman, Victor Jones, and John Laskowski.  Each Division should submit names for membership by November 23, 2021.  The focus of the team is on assessment so members will be asked to participate in some assessment activities and regularly report back to their Divisions.
    • After David left, Division members briefly discussed participation.  Jess Hagman is interested in the qualitative research aspects of the assessment; Yali Feng is also interested in participation.  Anyone interested should let Lisa know by November 17.
  1. Reports
  • Collection Development Committee (Ingold)
    • Cindy will add slides from the recent visit of the GOBI representative to the Division’s g-drive folder. CDC continues to discuss budget concerns for FY23.
    • Each Division should identify 3.5% reductions in state funds for collections. Cindy will ask Esra Coskun to compile percentages for each fund and share information with the Division in order to prepare for reporting at the CDC meeting on November 30.
  • Diversity Committee (Feng, Ingold)
    • The committee held a retreat and is revising its charge, as well as discussing programming ideas.
  • Faculty Review Committee (Ingold)
    • FRC voted on a promotion and tenure case. FRC is considering revising the scoring guidelines for the annual review.  A Promotion and Tenure Working Group was appointed to revise and update the P&T statement for the Library.
  • Reference Management Team (Hagman)
    • RMT is discussing Hub training for the spring 2022 semester.  There are ongoing conversations about replacing DeskTracker with Springshare’s LibAnalytics.  RMT is working with Jen-chien Yu to determine the best way to collect data.
  • Central Public Services Division representative (Phillips)
    • CPS will also be addressing the 3.5% reductions for FY23 inflation at an upcoming meeting.
  • Library Staff Support Committee (Vermillion)
    • LSSC changed its bylaws so that SSD and Law now each have their own representative.
    • A Question & Answer session with Susan Breakenridge was held to discuss staff concerns.
    • Funding for Reaching Forward South and ALA conference attendance was approved.
    • The need for security staff in the Library is being revisited, and Susan Breakenridge will send forward staff concerns.
      • One suggestion is to have campus security visit the Library periodically.
      • There are general staff concerns about having fewer staff, staff shortages, lack of breaks, and workload.
  • Outreach and Engagement Committee (Ingold)
    • The committee established a reading group and will publicize and hold skill sessions in the spring.
    • Members are also revising the grant application form since it is too long for the amount of money being awarded.
