Student-Focused Spaces Team

03/24/2022

Agenda

  1. Review Assessment tools and methods (Jen and John)
    1. The group reviewed the charge, and discussed how the team’s recommendations would be made, and how change would occur based on study results.  We determined more information was needed than the brainstorming document in order to determine viable tools and projects to pursue.
  2. Identify any current or ongoing space assessments (All)
    1. The team has some data fin a spreadsheet rom prior studies that will be reviewed for the April meeting.  The team discussed getting an IRB project going to analyze student social media posts about the library (e.g. Reddit).
  3. Select initial projects (All)
    1. Projects which involve current users of Library spaces
      1. The team discussed gaps in service that might arise fro the UGL closing. There is strong interest in working with users to see how they define “welcoming” library spaces, as well as understanding how the student presence in Library spaces enriches those spaces.
    2. From brainstorming document:
      1. differences between intended use and actual use;
      2. intended need and actual need
    3. Projects which involve students outside of Library spaces (Maybe plan in Summer for Fall?)
      1. From brainstorming document:
        1. what kind of third place do students need + sense of belonging in library spaces
        2. definition for welcoming with a focus on underrepresented students
  4. Other
    1. The IDEA lab could be one test site.
    2. The team agreed to review existing data to identify what existing feedback contributes to our understanding of welcoming, belonging, and factors which contribute to a sense of student ownership of spaces.
    3. We will organize a literature review of Libraries as third spaces, to better understand how the profession has approached this topic.
