  1. Welcome and Introductions
  2. Agenda Review
    • Susan went over the agenda, no additions were proposed by committee members.
  3. Acclamations, Accolades, Announcements
    • Illinois Information Literacy Summit
      • The committee discussed attending this, encouraged members to attend. There was discussion of the growth of the Summit over the years and excitement over this year’s keynote speaker, Char Booth.
    • Discussion of other conferences, LOEX, etc.
    • Framework Presentation at Illinois Wesleyan – May 14th
      • The committee discussed putting out a call for interested parties, registration is limited for participants from one university, so it was decided to pick individuals to attend.
    • Scholarly Communication Roadshow at U of I
      • This has yet to be announced widely, but will happen in April.
      • Harriet Green & CARLI are organizing the roadshow.
  4. Professional Development Series Planning
    • ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education program discussion (Merinda)
      • Merinda briefly covered the difference between the Framework and the ACRL Standards and demonstrated how she frames this discussion during workshops with other Universities. The committee shared their feedback about a potential workshop or other event at the Library.
        • Committee members were asked to share feedback about their departments’ experience using the Framework.
        • Committee recommends lunch discussion (Lunch & Learn)
          • 20-30 minutes of lecture at beginning, then discussion after.
          • This will happen later in the semester, possibly on a Friday. Susan will communicate possible dates with the committee as they are confirmed.
        • The committee expressed interest in having a more intensive workshop after the Lunch & Learn.
          • Summer 2018
        • Merinda recommended the committee read “How Learning Works” by Susan Ambrose.
          • The committee discussed having a book club, similar to the Crucial Conversations book club that happened in Fall 2017.
          • Susan is reaching out to Zoe Revell about a possible co-sponsorship between User Education and Staff Training for this book club.
        • The committee asked Merinda to elaborate on previous workshops she has given about the Framework, specifically how the workshops have been laid out. Merinda shared some group activities that have been successful at other institutions.

  5. International Student Program Update
    • Susan shared her progress in reaching out to CITL for a possible workshop on communicating with non-native speakers of English.
      • The committee was asked for feedback on: what takeaways do the committee want as the goal of a possible program with CITL?
      • The committee suggested a few topics, including approaches to creating and delivering lesson plans for ESL students, strategies for one-on-one communication on service desks, and how to create an environment in classrooms where students feel comfortable speaking up with questions during class.
    • The committee discussed the challenges and different considerations for working with ESL students in classes.
      • Susan shared that the mix of international students in non-international student focused classes (such as Rhetoric) sometimes poses challenges.
      • Kate shared that the Music & Performing Arts Library has many international students that use the service desk and expressed interest in learning how to better assist these patrons.
      • Susan will reach out again to CITL for dates for a workshop.
        1. Lunch & Learn or smaller scale to be determined, will also happen on a Friday. Susan will communicate possible dates with the committee as they are confirmed.
    • The committee discussed preliminary dates for the workshops
      • March (ESL)/April (Framework)
      • ESL – March 9th or 30th at noon
      • Framework – wait to plan until ESL has been confirmed
  1. Open Textbook Network (Janet)
    • Three trainings for CARLI institutions
      • April 23rd at Governor’s State University, 24th at Loyola, 26th at Heartland
      • Two members from each institution can attend.
        • Janet or Susan will reach out to Cherie Weible to see how to approach U of I attendees.
      • March 5-9th is Open Education Week
        • CARLI is holding a webinar on March 6th
        • Possible special Savvy Researchers happening.
        • Janet is organizing a panel of individuals involved in open access publishing and specific projects surrounding OER.
