  1. Sub group Planning – Set goals and timelines for each group
    1. Assessment Planning Folder

The team noted the need to talk to library instructors before they start instruction this semester, to help gauge expectations and perceived needs.  The impact of the UGL closure will be the first area of assessment, including: identifying which groups to target (Library instructors, campus instructors, students); deciding on quantitative and qualitative methods to use; and thinking about measuring impact after instruction season (approximately late November).  David will schedule the subgroup kickoff meeting.

  1. Professional Development

The subgroup will translate the competencies document into a professional development program outline.  Peg will schedule the subgroup kickoff meeting.  The team discussed scoping the program broadly and substantially, then getting feedback, then resizing as appropriate based on the feedback.  This might include having a survey of library instructors.  Based on the competencies, we will design a program that spans Novice to Expert, and potentially using a Hub training-like model for some of the core/Novice level.  The scope should include both classroom needs and professional development for supporting elearning and designing elearning materials.

The group also discussed an incentive structure to help encourage participation.  Parkland, for example, has a combination of certificates and funding for some faculty professional development.  Additionally, there are resources on campus to leverage as part of the program such as the CITL teaching certificate program.

  1. Definition of instruction updates [Lisa]

The team liked the definition, and felt it was inclusive, and comprehensive without being 20 pages long.  We will revisit the document throughout our work and decide if it needs to be adjusted based on what subteams learn.  One topic for future revisions is articulating why library instruction is important to campus, which can be informed by the subteam work.  a few minor edits were made, notably changing the language around ethical and legal standards after discussion noting that these concepts are not always in alignment.
