Help With Bibliography Searching

Go To:

You can browse the list of field guides only by classification. The default sort is by region and author. You can't jump to one particular region in the list, but it is possible to do an Advanced Search by Classification (such as Birds) and Region (such as Central and South America), which will have the same effect.

Simple Searches

To do a simple search, simply enter terms in the search box. You may search the entire record or by fields (Author, Title, Publication, Description, Region, or Classification). Multiple search terms will be searched as a phrase, i.e. entering Roger Tory Peterson will not pull up records for Peterson, Roger Tory.

Advanced Searches

To do a more complex search, click on the Revise Search link at the top of the page (in search mode, this is only available after you've done a Simple Search and is called Advanced Search in the Browse mode). You can then do And, Or, and Not searches in different fields or across the entire record. If you can't find a field guide in a fairly narrow topic or region, try browsing a broader classification (Animals instead of Birds, for instance) or search by region instead of country or state.

Wildcard Searches

This system searches exactly for what you type. To search variations and the plural of a word, include an asterisk * at the end of the word. For example, hawai*, will look for Hawaii, Hawai'i, Hawaiian, Hawaiians, and so forth. The simple term hawai will look only for the word hawai.

Downloading and emailing records

You may save records and either email them to yourself or download them as an html file.

To save records: Click on the "add to bookbag" link following the record.  Your bookbag will stay with you for a period of time, usually at least 2 hours.  You can do different searches and continue to add to the bookbag. The bookbag can hold up to 500 records. You may view your bookbag at any time by clicking on the "view bookbag" link in the navigation bar at the top of the main window.

Clear your bookbag at anytime by viewing the bookbag and then clicking on the "erase bookbag" button.

To email your saved records: Click on the "email records" button. You will be presented with a form that asks for your email address. Simply fill it in and then click on the "email records" button.

To download your saved records: Click on the "download records" button. The records will be downloaded to your browser as plain text.  If you browser has a helper application configured for plain text the record will appear in the helper application otherwise it will appear in the main window of your browser.

To Buy a Field Guide from this List

This bibliography is intended to provide descriptions of known field guides and is not a source for purchasing them. If a field guide was in print at the time it was entered into the database, a price will be listed. However, the price may have changed or book may have gone out of print since that time. Check with your favorite new or used bookstore, or with one of the many specialized natural history booksellers on the Web.
