University Library is the largest public university library in the country. It holds more than thirteen million volumes and 24 million items and materials in all formats, languages, and subjects, including 9 million microforms, 120,000 serials, 148,000 audio-recordings, over 930,000 audiovisual materials, over 280,000 electronic books, 12,000 films, and 650,000 maps. The Library receives over one million visitors to the online catalog each week, contains 47 individual libraries and currently employs 100 faculty and 300 staff members. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is a public, land-grant university that was chartered in 1867, under the name of the Illinois Industrial University. There are over 150 programs of study at UIUC, with more than 80 research centers, laboratories and institutes. The University employs 2,000 faculty members and serves over 37,000 students; undergraduate, graduate and professional.
Urbana-Champaign is located about 135 miles south of Chicago and is a diverse community of over 100,000.
