Summer Programs

The Great Uni Baking Challenge, July 10 at 2pm

Join us on Zoom for the Great Uni Baking Challenge! The theme is “Favorite Fandoms” and you’re encouraged to make your creations before the event. What is your favorite fandom and are there recipes out there you’d like to try? What about renaming a favorite recipe after a favorite character or a fantasy world? If you’re watching Avatar the Last Airbender, what do you think Katara’s favorite cookie is? Just some suggestions to get your ideas flowing. If you’re not an avid baker, why don’t you decorate a pre-made cupcake? Or make us a drawing of a three-tiered cake!

All are welcome to come, show off the treats and/ or fanart you’ve made, and tell us about your fandom and what you love about it. Take this as an opportunity to hang out with friends you’ve missed. Check out Pinterest, The Knead to Read, Pie Lady Books, or Geeks Who Eat for inspiration.

We hope to see you there!

The Hate U Give Movie Screening, July 24 at 2pm

“Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.” – IMDb.com

Log onto Zoom to watch The Hate U Give as a group, then stay after for a short discussion. If you have read the book, share what you thought about the similarities and differences. Watch the trailer below:

End of Summer “Bonfire,” August 12 at 1pm

Come hang out on Zoom, make bookmarks for Liberation Library, tell us what you did this summer, and requests songs for DJ Cynthia to play!

Liberation Library is a volunteer run & led abolitionist org that sends books to young people in Illinois prisons & jails to encourage imagination, self-determination and connection to outside worlds of their choosing.

Every book sent to a young person includes a handmade bookmark, so we are encouraging Uni Students to get creative and make bookmarks to mail to Liberation Library. This hangout is also an opportunity to get ideas for how to design your bookmarks and ask questions about this org and why reading is a right, not a privilege!

Please read these requirments to ensure your bookmark is accepted:

  • Do not use stickers, glitter, or glue
  • Use cardstock or construction paper
  • Use pen, pencils, crayons, or markers

Mail your bookmarks to:

Liberation Library

c/o In These Times

2040 N Milwaukee Ave

Chicago, IL  60647

If you are unable to mail the bookmark yourself, email Cynthia. She will work with Ms. Arnold, Paul, & the new GA to organize a drop off once school starts!

If you are unable to attend this event, but still make a bookmark, be sure to count it towards your event challenge! Just send us a picture of the bookmark(s) you made.
