Romanian Music

Description

The first accession was received circa 1979-1981 on exchange from the Biblioteca Centrala de Stat a Republicii Socialiste Romania and by donation from the Union of Composers of Bucharest, at the instigation of visiting Prof. Mircea Cristescu. It contained 10 scores and 6 LP discs or sets from the Biblioteca Centrala and 2 books, 36 scores, 23 LP discs from the Union of Composers of Bucharest with a heavy emphasis upon contemporary music.

The second accession of approximately 200 scores was acquired in 2025 from Sharon Hansen, Professor and Director of Choral Activities, Emerita. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and former doctoral student at the University of Illinois. She spent considerable time in Romania in the 1990s, conducting the Romanian Radio Academic Choir, the Academic Choir “Gavriil Musicescu” of the Iasi Symphonic Orchestra, and the Academic Choir of the “Oltenia” Philharmonic Orchestra, Craiova. Through her travels and contacts there, she amassed a sizeable collection of Romanian choral music scores and materials, many unpublished and unavailable in the United States.
