Atlases Scanning

**During the Covid-19 Library closure, Map Library will scan maps from atlases as requested. Scans will be done in color, at 600dpi, and saved as JPEGs. After scanning, requestors will receive information from Map Library staff about accessing and downloading the files.

Because folio- and some quarto-sized atlases, as well as pre-twentieth century atlases, do not circulate, bringing a camera is highly recommended. Large atlases will not fit on the unit’s tabletop scanner. Smaller volumes might be able to be scanned; consultation prior to using the scanner is requested and a personal flash drive is required.

Digitization Services

Because larger atlases can be difficult to handle, we suggest that significant scanning and reproduction be carried out by Digital Content Creation Services (415 Library, 217-244-2062). Their website has a service price guide, a reproduction request form, and additional contact information for the department. Turnaround time on services is usually 10-15 business days.

Beginning with the fall 2022 semester, Library users who order scans from Digitization Services will need to have a UIUC Aeon account to enable billing. Aeon is a system designed to enable access to and reproduction of special collections materials. If a Library user already has established a UIUC Aeon account, a new account is not required. Library users without a UIUC Aeon account should visit or will be directed to the Special Collections User Account webpage to create an account.
