Cartography Societies

North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS)

  • Members include many working cartographers who come from academic institutions, government agencies at all levels, and commercial firms varying from single-cartographer companies to those with 100s of employees
  • Promotes communication, coordination, and cooperation among the producers, curators, and users of cartographic and geospatial information about all aspects of cartography and the infrastructure that supports it
  • Meets annually in October with travel grant opportunities supporting conference attendance for students and professionals
  • Sponsors student mapping competition in conjunction with annual meeting
  • Publishes peer-reviewed Cartographic Perspectives as full-text online journal

Cartography & Mapping Specialty Group, American Association of Geographers (CMSG-AAG)

  • Most members are academic cartographers and their students focusing on cartographic research and education
  • Meets annually in the spring as part of the American Association of Geographers annual meeting sponsoring a number of sessions focused on all aspects of cartography
  • Supports masters-level research through thesis research grants; encourages student conference participation through student-organized sessions; sponsors annual early-career keynote address

Cartography and Geographic Information Society (CaGIS)

  • Members include educators, researchers and practitioners involved in the design, creation, use and dissemination of geographic information
  • Supports research, education, and practice to improve the understanding, creation, analysis, and use of maps and geographic information
  • Annual meeting in the fall includes a student paper competition
  • Publishes peer-reviewed Cartography and Geographic Information Science which is available through the Library’s catalog
  • Facilitates participation of cartographers from the United States attending and participating in the biennial conference of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and distributes grants to support attendance

Canadian Cartographic Association (CCA)

  • Members come from academia, all levels of Canadian government, and private industry
  • Promotes the disciplines and professions of cartography and Geographic Information Science in Canada, responsible for coordinating Canadian participation in the International Cartographic Association (ICA)
  • Meets annually in the spring
  • Publishes peer-reviewed Cartographica which is available through the Library’s catalog

Guerrilla Cartography

  • “Band” of mapmakers, researchers, and designers who work collaborative to promote the cartographic arts, facilitating an expansion of the art, methods, and thematic scope of cartography
  • Crowd-sourced “Atlas in a day” and “An Atlas” titles can be freely downloaded or purchased from the website
