Starting Points (Multi-Subject Databases)

• Browse a List of All Article Databases
• Academic Search Premier (EBSCO) - Great first place to go for both scholarly journal and magazine articles on most topics, especially current events and term paper topics like gun control, terrorism, etc. 
• Academic OneFile (Gale) - Also referred to as "Infotrac." Similar in coverage to Academic Search Premier (above), but the default search is a subject search. Good starting point for focusing potential subjects.
• CQ Researcher - A reference tool/magazine that gives overviews of major paper topics like abortion, gun control, steroids in sports, etc. Includes articles and lists of other resources, as well as Pro and Con sides for most topics. 
• Pop Culture Universe - Information on American and world popular culture, past and present - new technology (iPods, gaming, gadgets)...Internet memes and chatspeak...movies, TV, radio...music...comics and graphic novels...sports and pastimes...fads, fashion, fast food and much more.

Newspapers

• Access World News (News Bank) - Access World News is a comprehensive collection of full-text newspapers providing coverage of domestic and international news sources of recent years. Browse or search over 100 newspaper titles from Illinois or search across nearly 2000 titles spanning the globe.
• Newspaper Source (EBSCO) - Identifies articles in regional U.S. newspapers, international newspapers, newswires and newspaper columns, as well as TV and radio news transcripts.
• Lexis-Nexis Academic - Select news category from "Search Within" section.  Good for broadcast transcripts.
• New York Times (Academic OneFile/Infotrac) - Articles from 1995 - present.
• New York Times Historical - (ProQuest) - Covers the paper from 1895 - 1998 (although there are some gaps).
• Historical Wall Street Journal (ProQuest) - The historical Wall Street Journal (1889-1985) offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue.
• Ethnic NewsWatch (ProQuest) - Ethnic NewsWatch is a full-text collection of 200 newspapers and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press.

Agriculture

• CAB Abstracts (Web of Knowledge)  - Identifies articles in all aspects of agriculture, leisure, recreation, tourism, and veterinary medicine.
• Food Science & Technology Abstracts (Web of Knowledge) - Identifies articles in all areas of food science including food technology, human nutrition, toxicology, packaging and engineering.

Art

• ABI/INFORM (ProQuest) - A business, advertising, and management database of magazine and scholarly journal articles.
• Business Source Complete (EBSCO) Business, management, and finance articles from scholarly journals, books, and newspapers.
• Lexis-Nexis Academic - Includes articles on business, company financial information, industry trends and more. Select "Business" tab in red bar, then select from "Search Within" section to begin.

Communication

• Communication & Mass Media Complete (EBSCO) - Covers scholarly journals in communications, mass media, and other closely related fields.
• Communication Abstracts (EBSCO) - Includes articles in communications, film studies, public opinions, and more.

Education

• Proquest Congressional - Find copies of bills, laws, legislation, congressional reports, and other Congressional publications.
• GPO Monthly Catalog (First Search) - Lists books and all kinds of Government Publications on every conceivable topic.
• Proquest Statistical Insight - The first place to check for statistics on all kinds of topics, U.S. and International.  Click "Search tables base edition" to get started.

History

• America History and Life (EBSCO) - Articles from scholarly journals on American and Canadian history from prehistory to the present.
• Historical Abstracts (EBSCO) - Scholarly articles on the history of the world (except America and Canada) from 1450-present.
• JSTOR - Searches older journals covering history, classics (ancient Rome and Greece, etc.), literature, and many more subjects.
• Reader's Guide Retrospective: 1890-1982 (EBSCO) - Includes articles from popular magazines going back to the late 19th Century. Especially good for popular culture research on the early to mid-20th Century.

Kinesiology and Sports

Medicine and Health

• Health Source (EBSCO) (Consumer)- To search for consumer health literature including scholarly journals, general health care magazines, reference books, and pamphlets select this "Consumer Edition" of Health Source.
• Health Source (EBSCO) (Academic)- For refereed materials choose this "Nursing/Academic Edition" of Health Source.
• CINAHL (EBSCO) - (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) - Authoritative coverage of the literature related to nursing and allied health.
• PubMed (National Library of Medicine) - Identifies articles in basic and clinical biomedical research as well as in psychology other allied health fields.
• MEDLINE Plus (National Library of Medicine) - Identifies consumer information about health-related topics.

Music and Performing Arts

• Music Index (EBSCO) - Indexes a wide variety of music publications, both scholarly and popular.
• International Index to the Performing Arts - Includes theater, dance, and film.

Political Science

• Worldwide Political Science Abstracts (ProQuest) - Identifies scholarly articles on political science, international relations, law, public administration/policy and political economy.
• PAIS - Public Affairs Information Service (ProQuest) - Covers political, social, and public policy issues. Contains international information and some non-English sources.

Sociology

• SocINDEX (EBSCO) - Identifies articles in all areas of sociology including anthropology, criminology, ethnic & racial studies, gender studies, politics, religion, rural sociology, social psychology, and urban studies.

Women and Gender Studies

• Gender Watch (ProQuest) - Articles about gender issues from a wide variety of subject areas.
