On December 10, 2021, the architect/engineering firms submitted the final schematic design documents. With that and the Library’s successful work to secure funding for construction, the first phase of the building project (transforming the existing Undergraduate Library into an archives and special collections building dedicated for rare and archival collections) will be on the agenda for the January 20, 2022 meeting of the University of Illinois’ Board of Trustees for approval. Between campus support, fundraising, and internal allocations, the $50M in funding has been secured for Phase One. Plans have been reviewed and strongly endorsed by Provost Cangellaris and Chancellor Jones, with support from President Killeen and the University of Illinois System.

“As the Library enters the project’s next phase, we are excited to see ideas for the interior spaces take shape and look forward to sharing the developing designs with the campus community,” said Tom Teper, Associate Dean for Collections and Technical Services and Director of the Library Building Project.
