The Illinois Digital Newspaper Project at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is digitizing 100,000 pages of newspaper content documenting Native American history from the early 19th century to the mid 20th century, contributing it to Chronicling America. Digitization candidates will be solicited from multiple Illinois cultural heritage repositories and the Newberry Library will be a key partner. We are including newspapers published by or for Native American communities and held in Illinois repositories; newspapers relevant to the history of Federal Indian Boarding Schools; newspapers published in Illinois before and during Removal; and newspapers published in southern and central Illinois along Removal routes. This new content will be a valuable resource for the history of Indigenous-settler relations in the Midwest and Great Lakes areas, and will increase access to historical newspapers for under-resourced communities in Illinois.
