In 1989, the University of Illinois acquired The Woodward Collection of Advertising: what may be the largest collection of historic newspaper and magazine advertisement clippings in the United States. Covering roughly 1,800 cubic feet in 1,530 boxes, the collection includes ads from publications all over the country dating from the 1880s through 1980. It holds over 4 million ads from magazines and newspapers designated by product type, brand, date, and sometimes region, dating from the early period of mass advertising in the late 1800’s through the 1980’s, representing the social, economic, and cultural changes in the United States through printed, ephemeral advertisements particularly targeted at the developing middle class American. This grant funded processing the collection, one box at a time and its availability for research through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Communications Library. The grant project produce a searchable online EAD finding aid, MARC record, and website describing the collection. As part of the dissemination stage of the project, printed postcards were distribute to students, faculty and researchers both locally and nationally.
