Not only is accessibility required by law in the United States (e.g., the Americans with Disabilities Act), accessibility is also a component of the ethical practice of librarianship. The World Health Organization estimates that about 15% of the global population has a disability, though that may be under-stated given how many people have invisible and/or temporary disabilities. In the past decade increasing attention has been paid to the accessibility of library databases. For example, the Big Ten Academic Alliance has been undertaking evaluations of electronic resource platforms and collections since 2016. In 2019, the Big Ten Academic Alliance and Association of Southeastern Research Libraries created a partnership and formed the Library Accessibility Alliance to expand these efforts (see https://www.btaa.org/library/accessibility/reports for more information and reports from testing).
