E-book Accessibility

In an effort to simplify users’ ability to find accessible digital materials in our catalog, the Library has compiled information from e-book publishers outlining their accessibility compliance. The list below features e-book publishers recently designated for course reserves as well as vendors for the majority of e-books available through the University Library. For each, we have provided a link to their catalog holdings or a direct link to their own platform, when appropriate.

Each vendors self-reported accessibility issues are outlined below and will be updated as individual vendors take steps to remediate these issues. We have only recorded those guidelines that are not fully supported. If you are familiar with a WCAG standard that is not presented here, you can assume the platform fully supports it.

Instructors who want to use content from a vendor or platform with accessibility issues should consider remediation options and the potential for an alternative access plan rather than removing or replacing readings.

The guidelines are shown here in three distinct categories:

  • Partially Supports: some functionality of the platform does not meet the criterion.
  • Does Not Support: the majority of the platform’s functionality does not meet the criterion.
  • Not Specified: the vendor did not specifically address the criterion..

Within these categories, we have annotated the criteria to give instructors and students a better understanding of how these issues can impact the experience of individuals with different assistive needs. We represent these issues based on how the platform fails a user:

  • Vision: platform creates barriers for individuals who have difficulty perceiving or who are unable to perceive visual structure, graphical content, or dynamic content changes.
  • Perception of Color: platform creates barriers for individuals who  have difficulty perceiving or who are unable to perceive color, especially when color alone is used to convey important information.
  • Hearing: platform creates barriers for those with limited or no hearing due to lack of captions, transcripts, or alternatives to audible cues.
  • Speech: platform fails to provide sufficient alternatives for speaking when speech is the input, control, or operation mode.
  • Physical Manipulation: platform fails to provide alternatives to the use of pointing devices, such as a computer mouse, and input methods requiring fine-motor control, rapid response times, or complex manual dexterity.
  • Cognition: platform creates barriers for some individuals through unpredictable navigation, missing input instructions, unclear identification of link/control purpose, or a failure to help prevent or correct input errors.
