Examining the News

Examining sources can help you understand the perspective

Now that you've examined the sources in the "Cane Mutiny" article, you know that you have been exposed to some perspectives of sugar company executives and business leaders in Florida. You've also heard from some other sources, like a sugar farm manager and an expert on political contributions in the US.

From looking at the sources in the "Foes of CAFTA" article, you know you have heard from some labor leaders in Central America as well as some politicians and government officials. Among the other sources included were an analyst of Central American politics.

The journalist in each case chose these sources and asked them particular questions based upon his or her own initial disposition toward the issue. These sources each have a perspective on the issue at hand, based upon their own views, official positions, and interests. By examining the sources and considering their interests and positions, we can get a deeper understanding of the perspectives that are reflected in each of the articles.
