Research Interests

Beth Sandore Namachchivaya is Associate University Librarian for Research, Associate Dean of Libraries, and Professor at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign.  Namachchivaya holds a degree from the University of Chicago, and has held prior appointments at Northwestern University, the University of California, Berkeley, the California Digital Library, and the National Agricultural Library in Beltsville, Maryland. In her role as Associate Dean at the University of Illinois Library, she is responsible for initiating and guiding programs in research, scholarly communications, and data curation. Working with colleagues at Illinois, she has played a substantive role in the development of digitization and digital preservation programs, the institutional repository (IDEALS), scholarly communications systems and services, and research data services. She has authored, co-authored or edited over forty peer-reviewed journal publications, books, monographs, and high-profile journal issues focused on emerging roles for libraries.  Her research has been supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the National Science Foundation, the Library of Congress, and various private foundations. She was a co-Principal Investigator for Illinois’ National Digital Preservation Partnership supported by the Library of Congress from 2004-2010.  From 2011-2014 she was a partner, along with leads from the University of California San Diego and New York University, in the ArchivesSpace initiative, which developed an open source next generation archives management system and governance structure, supported by the Andrew Mellon Foundation.  She is currently a member of the Executive Management Team of the HathiTrust Research Center, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew Mellon Foundation, and the HathiTrust.
