Research Interests

I have played a key role in building the Library’s digitization, digital library research, and digital preservation programs, including the development of best practices for digitization and metadata, evaluating interoperability, and assessing discovery and delivery systems for visual and text information.  I initiated an international online training program for cultural heritage professionals, and have spearheaded a substantial digital preservation program supported by the Office of the Provost as well as the Library of Congress. To support this work I have been awarded research funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the National Science Foundation, the Library of Congress, and various private foundations.  I was appointed an NCSA Faculty Fellow in 2002 to support research on data mining of museum and archives digital content.  I am currently a co-Principal Investigator with John Unsworth for Illinois’  $2.7 million National Digital Preservation Partnership supported by the Library of Congress.

Awards

• Selected to participate in the Association of Research Libraries’ Research Library Leadership Fellows program, 2005-2006.
• Book co-authored with F. W. Lancaster--Technology and the Management of Library and Information Services--cited by Library Journal as one of the top books for 1998; translated into several languages.
• Awarded NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications) Faculty Fellowship to support research on methods to improve the usability of digitized cultural heritage collections, 2001-2002
• Selected to participate in the Advanced Research Institute, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1991.  A competitive, three-week, intensive research institute sponsored by CLIR, focused on developing research in core areas of information science research.
