Schuyler Colfax was a Republican member of the House of Representatives from Indiana (1855-69), Speaker of the House (1863-69), and Vice-President during Grant's first term. These letters, photostats from the Colfax Papers in the Library of Congress, discuss the election of Lincoln, the necessity for compromise, and the payment of senators.
