In this letter to George T. M. Davis, editor of the Alton Telegraph, "Hawkins Landrum" describes his upbringing and offers his opinions on tariffs, trade, banks, and low wages for labor. It is apparent that the semi-literate Landrum is the folksy alter-ego of an astute political observer. The original of this letter in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. The collection includes a photocopy and a transcript.
