Scope and Contents: Dorothy Lamon was the daughter of Ward Hill Lamon, friend of Abraham Lincoln. In her infancy, her mother died, and she was raised by her father's sister in Danville, Ill.
Using Ward Hill Lamon's papers (now in the Huntington Library), his daughter, Dorothy Lamon Teillard edited over his name his Recollections of Abraham Lincoln, 1847-1865 (1895; enlarged edn., 1911; 973.7L63 BLL19r). She also wrote By These Things Have I Lived (1948; 808.8 T23b), which on pages 56-57 prints her letter of Oct. 14, 1946, in which she recalls her carriage ride (when six years old) with her father and Lincoln. At the request of Earl C. Kubicek, that letter was addressed to his three-year-old son, Warren E. Kubicek.
The collection includes other letters from Teillard to the senior Kubicek (K), to his wife, to Warren Kubicek (W), and to Warren and his brother, "Freddy" Kubicek (W&F). These letters are dated Sept. 24-27, 1946 (F); Dec. 28, 1946 (W); May 11, 1947 (K); Dec. 29, 1947 (W); May 16, 1947 (W); Dec. 27, 1947 (W&F); Feb. 18, 1948 (W&F); Apr. 19, 1949 (W&F); Dec. 4, 1949 (Mrs. K); Feb. 16, 1950 (W&F); June 3, 1950 (Mrs. K); Dec. 30, 1950 (W&K); and May 19, 1951 (K).
The collection also contains letters from Earl Kubicek to Dorothy Teillard on June 11, Sept. 5, and Oct. 1, 1946, requesting as a "keepsake" the letter that she first wrote to his son Warren.
Robert L. Kincaid, president of Lincoln Memorial University, subsequently visited Teillard, and she is mentioned in letters which he exchanged with Kubicek on Apr. 8, Apr. 24, and Aug. 8, 1947, and on Apr. 30, 1949. In the first of these letters, Kincaid acknowledged Kubicek's article, "The Engineering Mind of Abraham Lincoln," Illinois Tech Engineer," 12:2 (Dec. 1946).
In addition, the collection includes an undated letter by R. Gerald McMurtry, director of Lincoln Memorial University's Department of Lincolniana, announcing the publication Teillard's By These Things Have I Lived. Finally, it includes Kincaid's report of her death, sent in an envelope which she had addressed and with a copy of Rudyard Kipling's "When Earth's Last Picture is Painted," that she had signed.
These materials came to the Library from Earl Kubicek's files. Kubicek was director of Alumni Relations and Placement at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
