King, Margaret A. Correspondence, 1864 | Illinois History and Lincoln Collections

Scope and Contents: The correspondence in this collection, all dated in 1864, includes eleven letters from Margaret A. King, of Warren, Ill., to her husband, Philander B. King, who had moved west, probably to avoid the Civil War draft. In her letters, Margaret writes about the health of their children, the weather, and the prices of goods and produce. There are also two letters from Philander to Margaret, offering a glimpse of his life in Washoe City, Nevada Territory, and three additional letters to Philander, one from a relative, J. M. Barber, and one each from his friends J. E. Scace and D. C. Allen. The collection, which includes typescripts of the originals, was acquired by the Illinois Historical Survey in 1967.
