Scope and Contents: Freeman Osbun, Co. D, 102nd Ohio Vol. Inf., served primarily in Kentucky and Tennessee and spent the last five months of the war in the Nashville Officer's Hospital. This collection mainly contains letters to Osbun from his family in Mansfield, Ohio. The letters, written mostly by women, describe their perceptions of the war, Copperhead sentiments against the war, and life on the home front. Many of the letters also mention the railroad being built nearby and problems with Irish railroad workers. The collection also includes a letter describing the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.
Kelly Grant of Champaign, Ill., loaned the original letters to the Illinois Historical Survey for photocopying in 1991.
