Online Catalog Update June 14-17 – special circulation information

Online Catalog Update June 14-17 – special circulation information

The library will be upgrading its online catalog software from June 14th – June 17th. During this time, the computer system for charging/discharging books and media items will be inaccessible to staff. Important things to note:

Books

* Books may still be charged;
* Any item that is returned will not be discharged until the system is running again, ~ June 18th
* The Online catalog (patron search for books/media) will be in read only mode--no requesting, and no renewals will be available

Media

* Media items will be library-use only; No Media items may leave the library
* Any Media items needed for classroom use during this time should be picked up by Friday, 6/12 at the latest
* Any item that is returned will not be discharged until the system is running again, ~ June 18th
* The Online catalog (patron search for books/media) will be in read only mode--no requesting, and no renewals will be available

Loanable Technology

* No loanable technology (laptops, video cameras, etc.) can be used (inside the building or outside)


Once the conversion is complete, all items will be able to be charged/discharged as normal.

Gaming Career Night 4/2/2009

The Undergraduate Library is hosting a Gaming Career Night on April 2nd from 7-10pm in room 295. Industry insiders at local gaming company Volition will offer students tips on breaking into the competitive gaming industry, including how to make a resume and a portfolio that will impress gaming companies. Academic advisers will be on hand to point out classes that will give students the skills and the experience crucial to gaming careers, and handouts will be available for students to take home. Campus advising and career services will provide information on improving job searching skills so that candidates can find that perfect job. Student gaming groups and industry experts will provide ample opportunities for networking with other professionals in a friendly, low-pressure atmosphere.

This event is part of the Undergraduate Library's Gaming Initiative. Past gaming events have included open gaming, a Music In Gaming Night, and a Super Smash Brothers Brawl tournament. More information on this initiative can be found at http://www.library.uiuc.edu/gaming.

To recap, Gaming Career Night will give you:

* Tips for breaking into the gaming industry from insiders at local video game developer Volition
* What gaming companies want in resumes and portfolios

Celebrate International Films!

Tonight is the first night of International Film Week. We'll have films Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening The first viewing is of Watoto Wa Mitaani, a documentary film about children living with HIV in Tanzania. Former UIUC alum, and documentarian, Michael Stewart, will be introducing the film this evening, at 7pm in the Main Library, Room 66.

And, please join us for any or all of the films.

Synopses:

Watoto Wa Mitaani
Documentarian and UIUC alum, Michael Stewart seeks to discover the personalities of 5 street children while at the same time understanding the large scale circumstances that confront them on a daily basis. Issues such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, sexual violence, and a lack of shelter interplay on the streets. In this setting the boys' talents, warm personalities and general happiness provide a stark contrast, as well as a glimpse into Tanzania's and Africa's strength. Guest Speaker: Michael Stewart.

Participate in a User Study at the Library

Librarians are conducting a study on the usability of library tutorials. The goal is to improve our understanding of what students need to know in order to be successful in their research and to provide better instructional tools for students and researchers to use. Sessions will last 45-60 minutes.

The study is open to all students (undergraduate or graduate) at the University of Illinois. Participants must be 18 or older. Sessions will be scheduled for weekdays during the month of February. Participants will receive a $15 gift certificate to the Illini Union Bookstore.

Electrical Upgrade Coming

Coming Spring 2009 - The Undergrad Library's electricity is being
upgraded! During spring semester, the electrical infrastructure will be
upgraded and many, many additional outlets will be added. There may be a
bit of inconvenience at times due to the construction/installation but
come April it will be wonderful!
