Overdue Materials

Returning materials on time ensures that the information will be available for the use of others. Therefore, prompt return of library materials is strongly encouraged.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library is responsible for issuing overdue notices and fines for University Laboratory High School materials and materials borrowed from other libraries on campus.

The University Laboratory High School Library is responsible for issuing overdue notices for all other materials (e.g., magazines and reference materials). The University Laboratory High School Library has developed a process by which students are notified of overdue materials by courtesy notices posted on their lockers or via email. When library materials are not returned, they are considered lost and borrowers are charged for their replacement (see next section).

V. Lost and Damaged Materials

A. Lost Materials

The following provisions are stated according to UIUC Library Policy.

When a book is 40 days overdue, the University Library Billing Office automatically issues a lost book billing notice and a non refundable $10.00 lost book handling fee. A replacement bill for a minimum of $125.00 per item is also issued at 40 days. Fees on particular items may vary. Faculty, students and staff may avoid such consequences by using the “My Account” feature of the online catalog to keep track of items or by calling the Telephone Center at 333-8400. There, individuals may access information about their circulation records, request items, and renew borrowed items. Members of the Uni High community are strongly encouraged to be responsible borrowers and to take advantage of these resources to avoid billing and lost item fees.

B. Damaged Materials

The patron will be billed for the cost of replacement of any damaged materials.

C. Billing Charges

The minimum charge for lost or damaged books or audiovisual materials is $125.
The minimum charge for lost or damaged journals, magazines, or vertical file materials is $10. Renewing or returning materials can prevent such billing.

For further information see University of Illinois Libraries Circulation Policy

VI. Restriction of Library Privileges

The University Laboratory High School Library reserves the right to restrict, suspend, or revoke library privileges according the judgment of the University Laboratory High School Librarian. The following situations serve as examples of when such action might be taken: numerous lost or damaged materials, chronic overdue materials, theft or attempted theft of materials, and/or other extreme cases.

VII.
