To learn more about primary sources, see our <a title=\"Primary Sources\" href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/tlas\/instruction\/i-need-to-2\/find-primary-sources\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Primary Sources<\/a>\u00a0page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of secondary sources include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Newspaper articles<\/li>\n<li>Journal and magazine\u00a0articles<\/li>\n<li>Encyclopedias<\/li>\n<li>Books<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why use secondary sources?<\/h2>\n<p>Secondary sources allow you to broaden your research by providing background information, analyses, and unique perspectives one or more steps removed from an original event or work.<\/p>\n<h2>How can I tell if something is a secondary source?<\/h2>\n<p>The following questions can help you determine if you have a secondary source:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Author<\/strong>: What is the author&#8217;s relationship to the material or event described? Does his or her knowledge stem from personal\u00a0experience\u00a0or not?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Purpose:<\/strong>\u00a0What is the purpose of the content? Is the author interpreting previous events?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Publication Date:<\/strong>\u00a0Is the date of the publication further away from the event described?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Where can I find secondary sources?<\/h2>\n<h3><a title=\"Library Catalog \" href=\"https:\/\/i-share-uiu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/search?vid=01CARLI_UIU:CARLI_UIU&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Library Catalog<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Find books, magazines, journals, and more in the Library Catalog.
